If the explanation is true, it is a rare case of a manager wanting to keep a lid on spending and the exact opposite of our situation at the end of SCP's first season back up. Three decent players signed that summer might have given us our best chance of getting promoted. This all blew up at the same time as Tony Fernandes was alleged to have said that he had the "ideal" manager lined up to replace Redknapp, so I assumed Warburton was going there. No one since has made that connection so maybe not.
