As my mother used to say, "It is a long lane that has no turning".

I don't know why, she just did.

No Italians. Most exotic relation was my aunt on my Dad's side, who was in her prime a professional ballet dancer. Not sure how that happened.

I have an Uncle Martini on her side of the family though, who like a lot of Italians, came over after the war. We have what is claimed to be the galvanised bucket he used when he worked on post-war repairs to the Citadel. Not sure how that happened either. It's not much of a heirloom is it? Nice bit of Chippendale furniture or an early Turner would be nice but a bucket of very dubious provenance.... I don't think the story holds water. Boom boom.

Angry. We don't even deserve to be in this league. Beaten at home by a less than average Leyton Orient. Shockingly terrible. The Devonport End turned this evening and to be fair they were well justified.

I thought we starred well and were the better side by a fair distance for the first 25 minutes or so.

Amaechi was outstanding, as he was for the whole 90 minutes, and a back three of Szucs, Mitchell and Galloway looked far more robust.

Despite some good play we didn’t make let alone take chances and so Orient were able the get back into it and by the end we looked like a bunch of strangers chasing a football bouncing around in a forest of invisible trees. There was little understanding between the players: passes into empty spaces and small groups of Greens getting in each other’s way

Cleverley was bemoaning 8 games in the first four weeks. For those that play on a Saturday, Sunday is a recovery day although those that don’t play are in training. Monday is largely spent in drills to prepare for Tuesday’s opponents and then its match day. Rinse and repeat. To be honest, perhaps we should concentrate on how we’re going to play and forget the opposition. At times tonight. We looked like 11 strangers.

There was chanting of “ where's the money gone” from a bunch of dickheads who no more clue about how a business is run than they do particle physics. We did make some bad buys last year: Al Hajj for example, but you’ve got to face facts: we’ve been relegated and for some are on the arse end of the universe down here, so getting players in isn’t all about money. At least we aren’t in the mess Sheffield Wednesday are.

In Caleb Watts and Amaechi we have two very good players indeed and Mitchell made a good start given he’s had no preparation time at all.

But we need more structure until the players build up an understanding of each other. That was sadly lacking tonight.
