so if it's still down to the competencies of the referee, what's the point of VAR?

Because it gives him the chance to see the incident in slow motion a number of times if necessary, as opposed to merely seeing the incident once in real time.

Only if he chooses to use it, which is my point. We have already seen plenty of incidences of the ref waving away any claims, VAR's not going to change that.

South Korea first goal ... the offside was proven to be incorrect as a Geman player played the ball ... VAR eradicated the human error ... only an incompetent official could then give offside ... perfect example if one was needed...

... but in most instances (and increasing all the time) they do choose to use it ... and the percentage of correct decisions has, and will continue to) increased as a result ... all to the good of the game in my book...

But that again comes down to his competence. As the VAR team will tell him that an incident might need review as they’d seen something. If he chooses to ignore that advice and it results in the wrong call then he’s a twat.
That Colombian ref in our first game being a prime example, as he ignored the calls to review the obvious penalties that should have been awarded for the wrestling of Kane. He’s apparently openly against VAR and so that was pig headedness.

So you have agreed with what I wrote then, if the ref is incompetent to start with VAR is not going to make the slightest difference

Personally, I think it gives even incompetent referees a better chance of making a correct decision - there will still be thet odd aberration, but the oddds of getting decisions correct improve markedly - as has already been evidenced in this World Cuo <ok>

Interesting that he's opening against it and no surprise he didn't refer to it really. I would be curious to know how many are against/for it.

Personally I'm against it full stop as I think it will evolve and ruin certain aspects of the game. I know it was always coming though but this tournament is way too early for me.

I think it's great that the big teams don't get the calls thanks to the referees discretion or that teams won't get the calls just because they are the home team etc. These little biases that influence referees and we moan about week in week out don't need to be there at all. Players take up to 3 minutes taking a penalty etc...so for me time isn't the problem. It's the refs who are making VAR look useless at times.

Anyway...this is an on going debate...hope y' enjoying the weather Libby. Having my first BBQ of the summer, just in time for KO

I see your point but I think we'll still see bias in the decision to review etc. But like you say this will go on and on lol.

Fair play on the bbq I'm working late shift <grr> Gonna take my boy to the park for a bit in a minute I think.

Maybe they wave it away when they did see the incident...

That’s down to the officials. VAR can only show what actually happened, it can’t legislate for how some officials interpret what they see.

What we just saw is called a bottle job!

So I repeat,a waste of time then. If the officials aren't going to react to what is bloody obvious what is the point of VAR.
