Steve Clarke has revealed Liverpool expect to have Martin Kelly back in action sooner rather than later. The defender was substituted after half an hour of the Reds' 3-1 win over Bolton Wanderers at the weekend due to a tight hamstring.

However, Clarke has confirmed the problem isn't a serious one.

The first-team coach told Liverpoolfc.tv: "Martin Kelly came off because he felt a little tightness in his hamstring. It was obviously disappointing for the player and disappointing for ourselves, but it's looking like a low-grade injury and so he should be back fairly quickly."

That's good news. Hopefully he'll be back for the Stoke game!

    Just to let you know.

It is rather mean to post an "Update On Martin Kelly" on the forum during transfer day. Almost gave me a heart attack!

Lets see he's got more experience than Phil Jones and Phil Jones will eventually cost Manchester United £22.5 million, so my estimation is £25+ million.

We will have to be careful with Kelly for the next couple of seasons. We have asked them to make a major step-up when their skill and speed is ready for the Premiership but their anatomy is not yet ready - their power/weight ratios are out of kilter. Whenever youngsters make this leap they are prone to injuries of this nature. Both he and Wellbeck are presently suffering.

At a much lower level I had the same type of experience when I moved from schoolboy football to playing for the Old Boys. At 16 I was playing in the Old Boys league, at 17 I was playing in the I Zingari Comb. and suddenly found that I kept pulling my left thigh muscle - an injury that had never happened to me before. Luckilly we had a consultant surgeon at the club who had an interest in sports injuries and he helped me to overcome the problem. Let's hope the medical team at LFC are as good as theyare supposed to be.

kelly seems to have the gerrard syndrome. he's still growing and getting injuries as a result.

He could make a CB in the future to go with coates.... lets hope so.... cos agger is injury prone and carragher has just one more year in him.

Yup, I saw that on twitter. Good news. Still waiting to see what Kenny does with a fully fit Jonno and Kelly now we have Enrique at LB.

This is an interesting point - I remember us bringing in Dr Brukner (I think that's his name) as the head of the sports science department and their aim was to reduce the number of injuries etc. Since then, we still keep picking up injuries to the likes of Gerrard, Johnson, Kelly, Torres, Aurelio and Agger etc. I know it's almost impossible to prevent every single injury but I don't see any improvements.

Martin Kelly has more experience that Phil Jones? How so? Kelly has 29 appearances for Liverpool, Jones featured in about 35 games for Rovers and 4 for Utd.

Martin Kelly is targeting a swift comeback from the hamstring injury he sustained against Bolton – and is confident the fitness problems which have affected him this year will soon be a thing of the past. The right-back was forced from the field after half an hour of our 3-1 win against the Trotters but is now eyeing a return to full training.

"We had a scan and it was good news - it was only a slight strain," Kelly told Liverpoolfc.tv. "I'll build up training this week."

Kelly was among the standout performers for Liverpool following Kenny Dalglish's return to the club in January, but his season ended with a hamstring tear acquired at Upton Park on February 27. It looked as though his time in the treatment room was over until this latest set-back, which followed praise from England boss Fabio Capello for his performance against Arsenal.

Despite the disruption to his rapid progress, Kelly is confident the fitness problems will not become a recurring theme.

"I was disappointed because obviously the England manager had talked about me but I know if I keep working hard my time will come," said the 21-year-old.

"The first thing I thought was, 'Can I carry on?' We tried a few exercises on the side but I don't think it was worth it. I could have maybe played on but (it was important to) get it right, with the history of hamstring trouble I had last season. I've done quite a lot of work over the last six months. Touch wood this will be the last.

"It's all part of football. You're going to get injuries. This is just a slight injury - no more than two weeks. It should be fine after that, injuries won't trouble me. It's just an unlucky time in the game for me."

Good news but I hope we don't rush him. Seems to have a dodgy hamstring and if not treated properly now, it could lead to serious issues later on his career.

Exactly what I was thinking. I personally think Kelly is a better defender than Jonno but I'd much rather we rest Kelly for a week or two as these sorts of injuries can plague the career of a youngster like him. Hope to see him back soon but only once he's 100% <ok>

You never know if Jonno and Kelly both arnt quite 100%, Kenny may start Carra at RB and play either Skrtel or even COATES at CB to counter Stokes more aerial talents

This is what I've thought. Even if Jonno plays there is still an opportunity for Coates to make an appearance in this game.
