I would never include David Armstrong in the unsung hero category. He was right up there as one of the classiest players of the era, and would have been an England regular but for the all-action Bryan Robson of ManU. Super intelligent reader of the game with the sweetest left foot it's possible to have. He wasn't that bad on his right either, considering it was supposed to be there purely so that he didn't fall over. Although Chris Marsden might be a latter day direct comparison to Armstrong, I have to say that, with no disrespect to CMFG, that he wasn't anywhere close, David was that great a footballer.

Any time just pleased to be able to help. If you think I am bossy you should meet the women in my family. It sounds as if they are very much like your ladies.

I would have thought the all-time unsung legend was Nick Holmes, as mentioned [I think] above in the OP.

Other contenders..? Paul Gilchrist, Hugh Fisher, Fred Kemp [well, he was MY unsung hero anyway], err... you know what, I'm struggling..?

Problem with unsung heroes is that you can't remember them because... well, they're unsung. ;)

On the theme of fairly recent ever-presents, what about Jason Dodd?

I think Doddsy is on the verge of being a proper Saints hero. Scoring direct from a corner sort of clinched it for me. ;)
