    This is what I posted on other forums

    It finished Charlton 2 Colchester 0.Goals from Harry Gerard a header from a corner that just went over the line.Second came from Olly Muldoon when he tapped in.We had a number of other chances that we were unable to convert.Some good performances from Gerard,Lennon and Edwards but the star of the show for me was Joe Gomez who is a class act.Let us hope we are able to hang onto him and some of the other players.We looked a class above Colchester who had a couple of half chances,but we never looked like losing.

    Team:

    Phillips
    Pyke,Gomez,Lennon,Edwards
    Poyet
    Ahearne-Grant,Holmes-Dennis,Muldoon
    Gerard
    Sho-Silva

    Subs Thomas,Stewart,Kennedy,Adeloye,Umerah.

    It's a race against time. Can we keep Joe under wraps until his 17th birthday? We can try but the problem is England under-16's keep picking him which gives Chelsea etc a chance to see him. Edwardes still has a bit of filling out to do, so hopefully is not such an early developer, which gives us a good chance of getting him on a contract.

    Despite their faults in the final years, the old board were always brilliant in getting the kids to sign pre contracts.

    I don't know anything about these. What age do you have to be and how binding are they?

    Can't say I know a great deal, but the one that stands out the most was shelvey. By the story they ran on the website it must have been binding as it was celebrated as if it were a new signing. Then on the day of his 17th birthday he put pen to paper on a full contract.

    Thought this would be useful.

    Important rules

    The more complicated and sought after status is the professional one. Here are some important rules you should know about when potentially signing a professional contract:

    a player can only sign a professional contract when he is 15 years old or older; it has to be co-signed by his parents or custodians;
    a player who is 18 years old or younger can only sign a contract for a maximum of 3 years;
    all other contracts are limited to 5 years;
    the minimum length of a contract is from its effective date until the end of the season;
    a contract between a professional and a club may only be terminated upon expiry of the term of the contract or by mutual agreement;
    a contract may be terminated by either party without consequences of any kind (either payment of compensation or imposition of sporting sanctions) where there is just cause;
    The validity of a contract may not be made subject to a successful medical examination and/or the grant of a work permit.
    You can find more detailed information in the FIFA “Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players“. These regulations also explain what (and how) a player (or a club) can do if the other party is violating the contract. We’ll have more on that in one of our next posts, when we will be discussing transfers.

    I didn't know that a 15-year-old could sign a pro contract. Presumably that would make it harder for Chelsea to nick any of our kids?

    I read an article in a paper yesterday that Charlton had agreed a compensation package for Kasey Palmer of a down payment of £200,000 rising to £800,000 on appearances and International caps etc.I will try and dig out the article.

    See below

    Chelsea’s new signing Kasey Palmer could cost the club £800,000 following his move from Charlton Athletic, according to the Daily Mail.

    The reports says that the package agreed between the two London clubs is loaded with various add-ons. It is understood that Charlton are guaranteed £200k for the 16-year-old but this could rise up to around £800k should the clauses be activated, I’m guessing their in relation to appearances, first team and perhaps international call-ups.

    There’s a fair amount of animosity surrounding Palmer’s transfer as he was highly rated at The Valley and the academy staff there are understood to be upset that he has departed, but the player has already made his debut for the under-18s in the 1-0 defeat against Manchester United on Saturday.

    Adi Viveash spoke about Palmer after the match:

    “Palmer has joined us from Charlton on schoolboy forms and he is an exciting player who did well against us in the Youth Cup. He hasn’t really trained for two weeks apart from a couple of days this week so to last 65 minutes at the intensity and quality he showed was pleasing.”

    The advanced midfielder has been playing alongside Gus Poyet’s son Diego for Charlton U18s and when scouts watch Diego at The Valley against Chelsea, it was Palmer that caught their attention.

    Another club cannot sign a contracted senior player without the agreement of his employing club. In practice this can be got round by the player refusing to give of his best for his employers or otherwise making trouble until they decide to cut their losses and let him go for a sum which they think undervalues him. Sometimes on a free if a lesser player.

    I think there are still a number of rich clubs which are too honourable to play this game of instructing a target to be disruptive but their numbers are declining as the game gets ever more cutthroat and more clubs are bought by foreigners with dodgy, or outright criminal, backgrounds. For a long time now Chelsea have not been an honourable club.

    If Charlton think Palmer went too cheaply, was it a case of his been disruptive and threatening not to perform, or are the contracts signed by younger players less binding?

    I think it is entirely proper that the best young players should be free to move to the best clubs, but the discovering and/or nurturing clubs should receive fair compensation to encourage them to continue finding and developing new talent.

    Even though an unfair and exploitative system has been imposed on us by the Premier League bullies and their FA puppets, I see one gleam of light for Charlton. An increasing number of Championship and lower league clubs may decide that it is simply not worth their spending lots of money on their academies only to lose any good players they produce for peanuts. Lots of similarly sized clubs to Charlton (and some bigger ones) are having nowhere near the success we are having. Just look at the u18 and u21 tables. Many of them may throw in the towel before we do, leaving less competition for promising youngsters.

    Although we didn't want to lose Palmer to Chelsea or McGinty to Manchester Utd, it is still a good selling point to parents to show that joining Charlton can be a route to fame and riches. That would be ruined if the transfers became a topic of sour grapes or even litigation.

    (I think the transfer of Jenkinson to Arsenal was fairly amicable and at the time most of us thought we got a fair price for him).

    The transfers of Sean McGinty and Carl Jenkinson were amicable because we got fair compensation. We've only got £200,000 for Palmer which is pitiful for such a promising player who has been with us since he was 9. The trouble is you just have to take whatever you can. Even before the new regulations the Defoe case showed this.

    Good post Eddie,it is vital to obtain category A status for our Academy.It will take time and money but it is absolutely vital.Not only because we would be playing against the likes of Arsenal,Chelsea etc and we would be able to attract better youngsters.But it would stop the bigger Clubs cherry picking our best youngsters and paying peanuts for them.Category B academies are feeder clubs for the bigger clubs.

    Shame the blue scum got through yesterday :(

    The U13's won the national Cat 2 championship and yet not a peep on the Charlton website?

    Are Casey's advisors that much better informed than Gus Poyet? His son has signed a contract with Charlton when there was interest from the blue scum.....I guess Casey's agent has other priorities from Gus who just wants the best for his son.

    More than likely Chelsea sweet talked the parents.

    Might even have been a bit more than sweet talk involved.

    Definitely. Not uncommon for bigger clubs to offer houses, jobs etc to family members.
