mackems U18s 0 Newcastle U18s 0 (after extra-time, Newcastle win 3-1 on penalties)Freddie Woodman saved two penalties and another was missed as Newcastle's under-18s progressed to the quarter finals of the FA Youth Cup with a shoot-out win on wearside on Wednesday evening.

Adam Armstrong, Sean Longstaff and Ben Drennan all scored their spot-kicks as United easily won the penalty shoot-out after 120 scoreless minutes.

After a quiet opening period, Dan Ward and Longstaff combined to give Armstrong a shooting chance after 26 minutes but James Talbot made a routine block.

On 35 minutes Jordan Blinco tried his luck from outside the area but Freddie Woodman saved easily in the young Magpies goal.

Seven minutes after the break Longstaff played in Armstrong who shot just wide and then Armstrong swivelled in the box and created a shooting chance but can't force it past the 'keeper as United searched for the opener.

There was a flare-up between the home 'keeper and Armstrong that saw the Newcastle man booked although Talbot appeared to aim a punch at him.

With seven minutes of normal time remaining Woodman was quickly off his line to deny Daniel Wright but it remained goalless and 30 minutes of extra-time was required.

The first extra period started with two Callum Roberts shots deflected just wide.Penalties:
    0-0
    Casey - Woodman saves
    1-0 Armstrong scores
    1-1 Blinco scores
    2-1 Longstaff scores
    2-1 Robson misses
    3-1 Drennan scores
    3-1 Embleton - Woodman saves

    Newcastle win 3-1!!

A good win, with good support from the picture on nufc.com
Ridiculous that there were more problems for fans getting into the ground.

    Crowd:
1,733. Away supporters were housed in the South Stand (pictured above) and access was only via one cash turnstile meaning congestion outside and people still coming in half an hour after kick-off.

United now have Quarter Final tie on home turf against the current cup holders Chelsea - who ended our interest in this competition at the same stage last season after a 3-2 victory at Gallowgate.

I was at that game, was gutted for the kids, they played well
but then again Chelski had one kid playing that had cost them £5million (he was a different class though)

I'd forgotten Armstrong was still an under-18.
