Macron and Barnier have started to see the potential damage to the EU's economy in the event of a 'do deal' so are now desperate for a deal. The UK now needs a proper Brexiteer to take over the negotiations to push them even further to compromise to our advantage.

Meanwhile Soubry has managed to make herself look foolish by saying Brexiteers should not be allowed to join the Tory Party.

Macron's managed the almost impossible by being less popular than Hollande at the same stage of his presidency. He is seen as aloof.

 

Today our Brexit secretary put in an appearance in Westminster to update MPs on progress in the discussions with the EU. Members listened to find out how things were going, and learned nothing. One Tory described him as delusional as he continued to say that the EU would accept the Chequers proposals. I have watched Raab over the past couple of years, and he does alright while reading his breifing notes, but when he gets asked something that is not covered he panics. Not very impressive Mr. Raab.

 

He must be one of the last in the country to believe Chequers is a goer. Raab should listen to Barnier confirming it is stone dead.

 

I agree with you. He looked a total idiot. A Brexiteer specimen at his best who created laughter at some of his comments.

 

Plenty of time for Davis and Johnson to save the day.

 

Davis has said this is not the time for a leadership challenge, so you are stuck with your official party line.

 

In that case the official party approach will need to change to a more sensible harder line.

How will that happen while your leader is staking her political reputation on getting a bespoke deal?

 

May should have left David Davis get on with the negotiations without interference from senior civil servants. Barnier much prefers a Canada plus deal Davis came up with.

 

It was obvious to all that Davis was getting nowhere, hence Chequers.

 

Asking a civil servant like Oliver Robbins to lead the negotiations is like asking a striker to play in goal. He is responsible for the Chequers plan disliked by everyone, quite a feat. Civil servants should remain as bag carriers, they don't have the skills or experience to lead the line.

 

Do you really think it's the politicians who do the negotiations? Good grief.

Everybody has seen the mess Robbins has created, he should return to making the tea. Negotiations should be left to those that live in the real world, not pen pushers.

 

You really have no idea whatsoever. But then we all knew that.

 

The problem was we had a remain PM being advised by a remain obsessed civil service. What it really needed was a Brexiteer PM and team adequately controlling the civil servants. Hopefully we get another chance to get it right, or maybe just accept a deal is not possible at this time.
