Some of these horses in the Melbourne Cup are stepping up in trip and I've no idea whether or not they will improve for it. I'll take a risk (purely to have an interest) with Snow Sky at 50/1 and Bondi Beach at 22/1

    Melbourne Cup Timeform Preview

    Extract
"One historical fact worth noting is that no international runner since Vintage Crop in 1993 has won the Cup without a lead up run in Australia: 80 have tried. Sky Hunter, Red Cadeaux, Max Dynamite, Bondi Beach, Kingfisher and Big Orange all have to overcome this stat. International runners having their second Australian run in the Cup have fared better, however. Five fitting this criteria have won - from just 20 representatives - including last year's winner Protectionist. This year Fame Game, Hokko Brave, Snow Sky, Quest For More and Trip To Paris all have that statistic on their side.

    Timeform weight-adjusted ratings:

    143 Fame Game
    142 Preferment
    141 Trip To Paris
    141 Sky Hunter
    140 Who Shot Thebarman
    140 Almoonqith"

Based on that it would look as though Fame Game and Trip to Paris are the most likely to at least place. But then they are 1st and 2nd favs at present

Haldon Cup looks a cracker tomorrow. Ground will probably be a little too soft for God's Own and that leaves me with Sire De Grugy vs Vibrato Valtat. VV had a long hard season and it took its toll in the Spring but with a good break and soft ground he can get the better of Sire De grugy getting 10lbs.

Don't know why but I like the look of Fortunata Fashions in the opener at Exeter. Ben Case website (which is well worth a look - gives a comment against all horses in training) says: "Recently purhased having won her maiden point-to-point on debut. She has plenty of size and scope and should do well in mare's races this season."

I too on Max Dynamite ground no issue , distance no issue and does well on big fields! Off the back of a great run lto just whether there is a better horse than him! One that did interest me Criterion- none better then him in Oz over 1m2f but step up is unknown but if he stays he should be placed

I wonder whether the 8th richest man in Wales can upset the Yanworth show with Welsh Shadow? Very nice bumper form in beating a subsequent winner in Duelling Banjoes with plenty holding up the form.

Just had to have a punt on one of my favourite horses in training, GOD'S OWN. 7/2 is a fair price to retain the Haldon Gold Cup. Would have won the Arkle if it wasn't for that monster Un De Sceaux!!

I have also had a punt on FLINTHAM 4/1 in the novice chase. Admittedly not the best hurdler in the race but being a brother to both Coneygree and Carruthers, I'm expecting to see a huge amount of improvement of fences.

Small double too just to push my luck.

He didn't do to bad at Cheltenham for horse that goes better Right handed! <laugh> that paid for a few beers that evening when he placed <ok> but surely tomorrow is about SDG, if he is back to any sort of form he wins this hand down and 3/1 is Huge against some second season chasers am all over it!

Am with you too on FLINTHAM would love to see him win! Yes the nicholls horse is favourite and so he should be on hurdles form but as we all now improvement on this family (FLINTHAM) improves- but for him to be chucked against some good types he must be showing something at home - Coneygrees first chase was at plumpton! This looks to be a good race so can't wait to see

SDG is certainly the one to beat Wooly. I just feel God's Own will be primed for this and always runs well fresh. And I love the bugger

I thought he was 11th in that particular league table. He's made his money lending out construction plant and there seem to be construction sites everywhere these days so he may have clambered up a few places.
A few quid on Dunraven Storm at Exeter tomorrow. Featherweight, 3 wins at the track and race fitness may see him upset those at the head of the market. Good luck all

Might well be 11th Chan, I always thought it was just a random number chosen by Sir Barney <laugh>

Bad news for Max Dynamite backers - he is now carrying my money too <yikes>

Sir Barney makes things up? As one of his regular readers I'm shocked by that.

I would love to see a big handicap here in the UK as I think it could really take the imagination. I would set it as an unlimited handicap over 10 or 12 furlongs with a first prize of £1 million.

I am with you Ron in that 50-1 and 20-1 for SnowSky and Bondi Beach are just too big to not have a small ew. I am amazed that Snow Sky could enter any race and be 50-1 actually, she was very impressive earlier in the season and I would take her to beat Bondi Beach over here for sure, even at the weights.

Always gotta check with Sir Barney Chan - only last week he was complimenting the leeks in his stew and I thought it sounded a bit odd for a Tuesday so I rang up his Butler who is a personal friend and it turns out he had nothing of the sort that day, as it was asparagus all the way that day. Watch him like a hawk, that's my advice.
