when I first watched pompey. I know the game was against Arsenal at FP and it was either late fifties or early sixties. My grandad took me and I remember him sitting me on his shoulders at one time and he was having a lot of friendly banter with some arsenal supporters as back then there was no segregation. Can't remember the score but I know my grandad was always calling them "lucky arsenal" I remember when he brought a brick wrapped in newspaper in to the ground so that I could stand on it and get a better view - wouldn't get away with that now of course! Ah, happy days free of violence but just as much passion. Being young I probably watched Jimmy Dickinson without realising it or taking in the man's greatness. This early indoctrination of course set me off in being a lifelong fan and though I now live in California I still avidly follow the boys through live text or whatever other means there is. So, I'm looking forward to the new season and the renewed rivalry with the saints. That we survived to do this is a bit of a miracle in itself. PUP. Kit.

According to my Mum I went to my first game at Fratton Park before I was born.

Cheers Eastney - 1958-59 it is then, lost 1-0 to Arsenal which is probably why my grandad called them lucky. Interesting site that.

My first games at fratton Park were also in the 1959 season although i was a little older (13) than you Calkit.
The first was against Nottingham Forest who later won the cup that year and the second was against Bolton Wanderers with Nat Lofthouse scoring their winning goal. The Bolton goalkeeper, Hopkinson, was the England keeper at the time.
It was Pompey's last 1st div season.
Jimmy Dickenson & Peter Harris were perhaps the only remaining players from Pompey's great era. Peter Harris played the following season in the 2nd Division and of course. jimmy dickenson played several more seasons in the 2nd 3nd divisions. Others players were Phil Gunter, a greatly under-rated player in my opinion at fullback or cente half, and Saunders as centre forward.
Despite relegation I became a regular supporter to the extent that my own soccer involvement would allow until emigrating in 1973 but, like Calkit, still follow the Pompey news.

Hi PDU. Got to say that I do find these chat sites invaluable for keeping up with the news and also for still feeling part of the club. I was on 606 from early on and now we have this site which I am getting to enjoy. The Saints lads on here seem to be a good bunch so hopefully we can have some good friendly banter. I know that there is another Pompey fan in my area as I occasionally see his car which has a Pompey sticker on it. Your hometown club is always in your blood no matter where you are.
