Rudolph Carnap once stated, " In the domain of metaphysics including all philosophy of value and normative theory, logical analysis yields the negative results that the alleged statements in this domain are entirely meaningless."

    Was he smokin' or what?

I agree with him, Wittgenstein alluded to the same reasoning for an underlying sense of perspective which was indicitive of the humanist trait which is ubiquitous throughout history..

Don't other animals display apparent altruism, though?

Are altruism and humanist tendancies what make us human?

    Isn't altruism selfserving?

Ultimately, it's argued that it is but surely the very notion of altruism is selfless in it's regard.

If something is ultimately self-serving, it shouldn't be labelled altruism (if I keep talking no-one will notice that I didn't understand the OP <whistle>)

Perhaps, but if we listen to Hobbes he also enforces the notion of perspective variances in the sub domain of humanist interaction, which is contradictory to say the least.
