The biggest deal of yesterday could be Ruiz's move to Bremen not going ahead , I know a few country's window is still, open for a few days but if he stays he has to play ............................... Bettenelli......................... Visor ............. Bodurov......... Burn .......... Stafylidis . ................... Hoogland...... Parker........................ .............................Hyndman................................ ................... Ruiz .............. .... David................. ............................. McCormack.........................
Obviously I'm not privy to the details of transfer fees, but a vague summary based on the figures reported would indicate we received about 17.5m and paid about 16m in transfer fees. I know we probably didn't pay/receive that upfront, but even so... we spent basically nothing whilst clearing about 75% of our wage bill. Presumably the parachute payment is being used to generate bank interest at 1%? I know Felix has his issues tactically and alienates some players, but Khan has hardly backed him financially.
Good points Surlyc,I know I have said it before but a couple of quality loanees from London clubs would suit us fine. the 2 I would love to see are Dembele and Chech ok there wages may be high but we can afford it purely on what we have saved in the clear out. Khan has to think big like Mo did at the beginning of his reign if he wants to be the chairman of a successful club.
Think it was good business. Had we brought more the whole idea of developing the youngsters would be thrown out. I can see a cheap free agent joining to help with the midfield although things are not that bad. Last weekend's displayed has given me renewed optimism. Khan is a businessman and will manage it tight... MAF splashed the cash when he joined but his is responsible up to a certain degree on the relegation by milking the cow!! I can even see a role for Ruiz in the midfield if he stays.
I think the transfer window has held true to the vision of bringing youth through with the guidance of a select number of older pro's. The average age of the guys brought in is a shade over 23. With Hyndman (18), David (21) , Bettinelli (22), Burn (22), Parker (33), Chihi (26), Woodrow (19), Dembele (18) the average age of the team that played Cardiff is.......................a smidge under 24! What was last seasons average age? 76! This is the future, I hope the club doesn't lose sight of this despite the lack of results in the first 5 games.
One player i'd have liked us to have a punt on was Jelle Vossen who went to Boro on loan, I really rate the guy. I know we have an abundance of young strikers, but i'm still worried about genuine goal scoring fire power.
All in all a sensible transfer window. I do not know the ins and outs of the financial fair play rules but looking at those figures that Surly provided I can only assume that we fall in order of the FFP rules. It was always going to be a massive transformation and I for one am glad it is done now. I will put my hands up and admit a minor meltdown recently with our start to the campaign. I was very critical of MaGath and the board, however, upon reflection our season starts from now. We have some very good players and some who are new to not only the championship but also English football. They will take time to bed in and gel as a team. I hope Felix gets his first eleven sorted ASAP and that they get a chance to learn how each other plays. I look forward to seeing what Casasola, Fazlic, Chihi, Taggart and Smith have to offer. COYW
I've been negative towards Ruiz, if he stays he must play. Could we see the best of him in the Championship - I hope so.
Frogman, its a long season. We will defo see them play. Cravens, absolutely we need to see if he can cut the mustard, Bryan needs to play in his preferred role, behind the strikers,. If FM does that and not put him on the wing he'll be great, imo of course.
I've always said that the way I'd build a team up from scratch is to try and get partnerships working all over the pitch. I like that we got Smith from Leeds and hopefully he can link well with McCormack again, as my striker partnership so far would be Rodallega and McCormack, but so far Magath seems to have a downer playing Rodallega. At the back in the center for me Burn and Bodurov have been the best mix so far. Both Burgess and Hutcinson have seemed nervous and physically bullied, so need more time to settle. I've not really seen any partnership between fullbacks and wingers yet, the closes for me has been George Williams and Stafylidis in the one game. None of the wide men have impressed when it comes to crossing the ball on the run. I like Hoogland in the DMF position, giving the CM and the fullbacks a chance to get forward. The AM and CM haven't really had a stable partnership as Magath carries out his experiments, so it's been hard to judge. I guess Parker will be the player who gets chosen most, and so far Hyndman has impressed me with his performances, the likes of David and Roberts have flattered a bit in a few games, Ryan Williams and Eisfield the games they've played have been OK. Magath's experimenting has been harsh on some youngsters players and Dembele, Woodrow, Christensen, Kavanagh along with Burgess and Hutchinson have all been a case of boys against men. Let's hope we start to get a more settled side soon.
I like your idea of partnerships, SuperBri, but perhaps the midfield diamond that accomodates Hoogland in midfield is the reason there hasn't been a lot of cohesion between full backs and wingers. I suspect the significant partnership there is between Parker and Hyndman in front of Hoogland, and I can see that getting better and better. With a narrow diamond in midfield, there isn't an obvious partner for either full back, but Stafylidis and Voser seem well suited to providing the attacking width in addition to their defensive duties.
This trio certainly looked good against Cardiff and I agree is the way forward. The main concerns though is cover; the posibility of injury and whether Scotty will regularly last 90 minutes leaves us vulnerable. I know this has been touched on in the other thread but it's disappointing that a proper defensive midfielder hasn't been brought in (so far). For me (and obviously rosc) Hyndman is going to be key and to get the best out of him we really could do with a ball winner and 'enforcer' doing the dirty work for him. Dare I say it .. a bit like Etuhu was to Murphy.
