This is not a footballing thread as such, but as everyone is aware about the riots over the weekend. I was horrified to see news footage on the tv. What I have been reading is that there is a possiblilty that the match could be postponed if the trouble continues and the police have stated that it could. I for one think that this is the right thing to do, thinking about the innocent people that might get caught up in it. Thoughts?
TMT - i hope you're right. Apparently the police are monitoring social networking sites just in case.
The worrying thing is that it appears to be causing a trend. It's not isolated to one area, as people are copying the behaviour in other places.
My initial response was that I can't see the game being called off, unless the police receive some information that there will be any kind of repeat in Tottenham over the weekend. Thinking about it though, IF there were more riots in the area around the time of the game it would be an absolute disaster. Looting mobs, plus 35,000 football fans(many drunk) descending on the same area would be impossible to police, the only way they could prepare for it is by using resources from other areas of London, leaving them rather less protected if the riots aren't at Tottenham. As much as I'm itching to get back to the Lane, I'm inclined to agree with Ensil. I should add that I don't know how much notice they can cancel the game on, if they can leave it until Friday then it may go ahead if it dies down.
On the basis of what I've heard tonight, I think it's garunteed. Maybe we could still have our game on if all our fans promise to behave themselves so the police needn't turn up?
The England game is the first decision...no history between English and Dutch supporters is there!! If the Police are still stretched by the weekend, I can't see it, as disappointing as that decision is, a football match is insignificant in comparison.
