The current Mrs Onionman has booked a party for my son's birthday on Sunday at 3:45.

    What tactics would you suggest?

Perhaps I should point out that my son wants to go to the game as well (we're both STH). Perhaps I should have put another option: leave the other kids at the party and go to the game with my son...

Why not have the party after the game? Although it may not be much of a party if Saints get tanked by Spurs!

Depends what the party is, costs of party etc. If it's not expensive then rearrange something for after the game.

It would seem that this poor woman has a limited tenure in your eyes anyway so ask your son want he wants to do. If he says lets go to the match go and then while you are at the game that should give this badly treated lady plenty of time to pack her bags and be away before you get home.

On the other hand if you value and respect this lady you will say to your boy that he has a lifetime of Saints supporting to do and thousands of matches to attend and this one game is meaningless in the greater picture of his Sainthood. Anyway you promise him that to compensate for the missed match you will take him to an away game of his choice.

You and he then thank Mrs Onionman for being such a great mum and organising the party and you work your socks off to make it go with a bang.

You then have a happy son and most importantly a very happy Mrs Onionman.

With women always remember you must make them feel very special and much appreciated. You will receive so much more by return.

Hurt her feelings and go to the match with your boy and all three of you will have to live with some pretty miserable possible consequences.

Your wife is more important than a game of football.

PS Why wasn't she planning to go to the game as well?

Depends on whether the Mother in Law is going along! You have to prioritise I am afraid. However as the doom and gloom merchants say that we don't have any chance of winning it may be more pertinent to keep the peace and enjoy the Party. I am single so my qualifications to comment are minimal.

Presume this party was arranged before game was moved? Situation not helped either by what happened at the last match I suppose. I;m with Beddy on this one. Avoid the result and watch the extended highlights on Sky!

Attend your sons party - no question. When its your children - they always come first.

As some have also written - do not expect us to get any kind of result from the game anyway - especially if we play 4-3-3 again.

A touching sentiment, but clearly nonsense.

A tricky one but in this case the child needs to be put first, let him choose.

If he chooses the party go along cheerfully.

If he chooses the game then you need a strategy to deal with the domestic fallout, in addition to relying heavily on the "it was his choice" defence, I suggest you offer your wife the compensation of a family day out on the now vacant saturday afternoon perhaps with some other family members (perhaps even the in laws?)

It may be a touching sentiment but if you disagree then I have to say that you have lost touch with reaity and what is truly important in life.

This whole problem would not have occured of course had Mrs Onionman's interest in football been cultivated such that it was she who was saying to her son that the party was off as she was going to the match.

The very lovely Mrs Godders:emoticon-0115-inlov could not survive without her fornightly hour and a half of swooning over Morgan Schneiderlin.

Before now she has left me on my sickbed to go to the match.

TheCurrent Mrs Onionman goes to one match per season, largely to check that the Good Lord Lallana's thighs are still firm enough to warrant his selection.

Unfortunately, with her having been brought up in an A r s e n a l supporting household - despite living on White Hart Lane, no less - she doesn't understand anything about football.

You may like to know that she has stated that if I go to the game she'll still love me but she will miss me.

    Negotiations continuing...

You are a very lucky man to have such an understanding wife.

Look after her and treat her well and please no more of this back of the hand nonsense.

Decision made, we're missing the game - the tickets are going to a couple of lads from Swindon who rarely get to games.

However, here's a point I hadn't mentioned, as I knew it would skew the results.

The three games we missed over the past couple of seasons were:

    10/11 - Swindon 4-0
    10/11 - Peterborough 4-1
    11/12 - Derby 4-0

So, if that's not a handy pattern I don't know what is. Looks like I'll be missing a drubbing of Spurs on that form!

Enjoy the game and when there's a chorus of "One Nigel Adkins" please all sing a tiny bit louder so it sounds like nipper and self are there.

These tactics are spot on, so Onionman follow them to the final detail.
