‘Definite top six contenders’ – Did Bristol City have a successful transfer window?

Once again, Bristol City made a promising start to the summer transfer window, getting deals for defenders Ross McCrorie and Rob Dickie over the line early on.
Bristol City are making a name for themselves in the transfer market; as a team who like to get the bulk of their business done early.

They’ve once again spent their share of money and they’ve had another big player sale in Alex Scott who joined Bournemouth in a £25million move.

And Nigel Pearson’s side have started the season well, taking eight points from their opening five games of the season to find themsleves in 8th place of the table for this month’s international break.

So, let’s take a look at all the ins and outs at Bristol City this summer…
    Ins
Jason Knight (signed from Derby County)
    Ross McCrorie (signed from Aberdeen)
    Rob Dickie (signed from QPR)
    Haydon Roberts (free transfer)
Taylor Gardner-Hickman (loan from West Brom)

    Outs
    Alex Scott (sold to Bournemouth)
Kane Wilson (sold to Derby County)
    Han-Noah Massengo (released)
    Jay Dasilva (released)
    Tomas Kalas (released)
    Taylor Moore (released)

    Our assessment…

“The way that Bristol City go about their transfer business is very commendable. They clearly identify targets long before the end of the season and make their moves early on, taking the pressure off them as the window goes on.
“And this summer was no different. I was impressed to see the likes of Jason Knight join and equally impressed to see how much the club spent; and all before Scott was sold.
“The free signing of Haydon Roberts is another particularly impressive signing and it seems like the club have bolstered well, and in the necessary areas of the pitch, with the Robins starting the season well.
“Pearson is doing a rather understated job at Ashton Gate and Bristol City are starting to look like definite top six contenders in what is a very competitive Championship roster.

Top 6 at the moment is a stretch of the imagination! [ my personal opinion is top 10, thats 8th /9th/10th ] just feeding in the final details before I try out my "programme to see where it says we might finish"
Some of the clubs have made some very astute signings to go for broke ... lost count of the loans in the championship! and quite a few transfers of "interesting individuals"

    Top 6 ? Really ?

IMHO we'll do well to finish above the bottom 6 at this rate.

With Conway out, goals are hard to come by and poor home, a failing we've now had for several seasons, remains a major obstacle to improving our league position.

When you see it laid out in text, it's clear (to me at least), the players exiting are better than those that came in. And as we finished 14th last season, why would we now suddenly be top 6 contenders....

Tommy Conway fit and if we had brought another no9 in then anything is possible.
I had us 6th to 10th in the prediction league and i am sticking with it-if we are right in the mix in January i hope Nige can bring the extra quality in to get us over the line.

Agree i said that all along but a 9 was the most important out of the two.

    Top 6, not a chance.

Injuries to prone Williams and James and we'll do well to finish much better than above the drop zone.
As for the new additions I think Dickie is behind Naismith and Vyner.
    McCrorie is plain unlucky.
The others look like back up except Knight, a fantastic and our best signing this summer.

Liked what i saw of Taylor Gardner-Hickman think this could be a excellent bit of business.

Matty James is instrumental to how we play he orchestrates everything in the middle-Williams looks like we are seeing what he is about hope he can stay fit.

Bristol Live understands Pearson’s desire is very much to remain at the club and further build on what he’s been responsible for creating. Never mind the affection he has developed for the club, and the area.

If Pearson is not given a new contract then that sums up Bristol City all over-

Must be me being delusional, but I don’t see why we can’t at least finish 10th.

yeah we have a small squad, few player out injured here and there but overall our squad isn’t that bad despite lacking in some areas.

I like Max and he’s doing fine but for me he isn’t a number one.

This without fail should be his best season.
I said at the beginning of the season, there should be no excuses.. if Nige thinks otherwise, he should walk now imo.
I actually believe it will be his best season..

Making a silk purse out of a sow's ear must be possible in someone's eyes. As a guide what were the pundits positional ratings of Luton Town in last year's Championship table - last?

I just don't think we've got the quality or the strength in depth to finish in the top half of the table, when more injuries and suspensions inevitably come along.

the time NP took over I had placed a whole series of bets and stood to win £treble figures, providing we finished 12th or above ... top 6 / and other bets in the mix would have taken me to 4 figures .. I couldnt see us being less than 12th ... circumstances beyond our control!!!! board panicked SL panicked NP arrived................ covid happened of course but bets stood!

Pretty much my thoughts, had they added to the numbers then 6-10, as they didn’t I think we’ll do well to finish higher than last season. Definitely need another keeper as well.

I’ve heard if either Vyner or Dickie get injured due to player shortages, NP is considering making a comeback.

You would think with his background from his playing days our defending would be top notch!!

You can’t educate pork, he can tell them what to do, but he can’t do it for them, besides he was decent, but not top notch himself
