The under 18's progressed through to the 4th round after beating Darlington 3-0 at SJP.

A Remie Streete header at the Leazes End after 29 minutes gave the hosts the lead after a fairly even opening.

With a swirling wind making playing conditions difficult, United looked to keep the ball on the ground and as the first half progressed were looking the more dangerous side.

Marcus Maddison doubled the Magpies' lead after 71 minutes, crashing home a shot from the edge of the box.

Five minutes later Adam Campbell secured the victory with a fine looping effort from the edge of the area to make it 3-0.

Team: Baird, Nicholson, Riley, Miele, Streete, Storey, Maddison, Knight, Hooper (Turton 85), Campbell, Hoganson (Sayer 72).
    Subs: Mitchell, Smith, Lopez.

Crowd: 1,136 on a chilly night at St. James' Park.

Darlo made it through to this stage after winning five previous rounds; beating Gateshead (3-0, away), Chester le Street (4-0, away), Altrincham (3-0, away), Sheffield FC (7-1, home) and Shrewsbury Town (2-0, home).

This is the 60th running of the competition and United will be attempting to win it for a third time, having lifted the trophy in both 1962 and 1985.

Last season saw their hopes dashed at the Fifth Round stage by eventual winners, Manchester United after having earlier beaten Dulwich Hamlet and Grimsby Town.

Already through to the Fourth Round are fellow Premier League sides Manchester City, Manchester United, Wigan, West Brom, Blackburn, Swansea and QPR. They're joined by Championship clubs Burnley, Cardiff, Ipswich and Nottingham Forest - the latter seeing off the mackems.

Be nice to have at least one trophy in the cabinet. Seems they've got a good chance too.

Heard a lot of good things about him, but then again it seems there's quite a few of them that's promising.

Toland seems to be another exciting prospect with a great future ahead of him. Seems him and young Fergie are pretty good mates too.
