Does anyone know how long it would take Dawson to recover from Saturday and return to peak fitness. 13k is alot. I remember Phil Brown saying 10k was a fantasic achievement for a centre mindfield.

I thought players preferred to play matches as it was easier than training.
A few years ago I read an article in one of the morning broadsheets about footballers diets and how they changed pre and post match ie preparation and then recovery.
The gist of the article was that too many mid week matches were affecting this as the players were starting to prepare for the mid week match before they had recovered from the weekend.
Might have been a load of tosh but it seemed plausible at the time.
So the upshot might be that they had the wrong food on Tuesday lunchtime.
Perhaps ther had Parmos rather than pasta.

If he did say it that's nonsense. If you look at the stats 10k is completely average during 90 minutes, never mind for centre midfield.

Leigh Palin once told me that he wished they played every Saturday and Wednesday and had no training at all.

Not that Leigh was a really someone you'd want to base a training regime around.

It must be coming near contract time! :emoticon-0112-wonde

Seriously though, Mel, it's a good point to discuss, as the work-rate and style of exercise over that distance is physically demanding in different aspects and the demands on pace, draw on reserves very quickly - that is why a canny manager will use new legs very tactically and frequently will see a less gifted player overcome a knackered talent.

Spot on - the training and recovery regimes are totally different - anyone who has played alot of footbaal and then moved to squash will understand that all too well!!

It's a valid point , but a bit lame in-so-much that over the years, I have heard and read the comments of many well respected managers and coaches saying exactly the same thing as Bruce is sharing with us - only his use of Pro-Zone gives his remark an empiric credibility.

Don't get Glenn Hoddle started on this!! :emoticon-0113-sleep

Aaah, Leigh Palin. I remember attending a Tigers 2000 meeting where he told the story about how Terry Dolan mistakenly signed him for Bratfud thinking he was getting a different player and how he also got a 'bung' of Cloughie when he left Forest. Later at the same meeting he went on to nearly have a fight with a drunken member of the audience after Leigh asked if his mother had been a weightlifter "cos she mustve been a dumb belle to raise you".

    Happy days.

Leigh's got some great stories, he's a good laugh, I see him quite regularly and I've played against him many times(he can't run, but with the ball at his feet you can't get it off him and he still completes every pass). Deano still stays with him whenever he's in the area and he's got him playing for Walkington Veterans.

I think Deano's playing for Walkington 3rd's, a lad who lives down my street is also playing for the 3rd's.

Maybe, they played my veterans mob in a pre-season friendly, but Deano was out with a hamstring strain/hangover.

Alright then smart arse what ****ing difference is there? Football is football, I said we didn't take the same hard crunching tackles very often but we'd play twice as long and probably run twice as far. Just because we don't have the technical ability to kick a ball like they do, doesn't mean we run and turn and jump and sprint and slow down any ****ing different. The major difference is they train every day for years for what they do, that was our training.

To be fair you make a reasoned argument - Im pretty sure lesser talented players run the same way and in the same bursts as professional players. If anything, because they're not as good with or without the ball I'd suggest they're likely to run more. A non league player busting his gut as a semi pro is likely to run more than someone like Zlatan Ibrahimovic who spends 80% of the game stood still and then does something amazing with the ball.

Michel Platini and Franco Baresi famously used to come off the pitch without a bead of sweat on them cos they simply didnt run. They didnt have to cos they read the game so well.
