Saw this today and I've got to say I'm underwhelmed. I'm certain we can do better than this lad.

Newcastle are preparing a move for West Ham defender James Tomkins, according to reports from talkSPORT.

The Magpies have endured a tough start to their Premier League campaign, notching 20 points in 20 matches.

One reason for this has been the club’s shaky defence, which has conceded 37 goals, one more than bottom placed QPR.

This has forced manager Alan Pardew to set his sights on defensive options and he has highlighted Tomkins as one of his top targets.

The Hammers star has become frustrated this season by a lack of first-team opportunities, leading to speculation that he may be willing to leave London.

Last season Tomkins struck up a solid relationship with Winston Reid, but this term Sam Allardyce has elected to partner the New Zealand international with James Collins.

The Upton Park club will be reluctant to allow the 23-year-old to leave, but he may hand in a transfer request should Newcastle’s interest further.

Tomkins graduated from the East London outfit’s famous academy set-up, making is debut during the 2008 season.

He left the club later that year to join Derby on loan, but returned to the West Ham first-team for the 2009/10 season.

His impressive form last year gained him a placed in the Great Britain team for the 2012 Olympic Games.

As long as he's only cover and for cheap, I don't mind.

James Tomkins and Modibo Maiga, why are we trying to recruit players that are struggling at West Ham? I don't doubt they have some ability and if we're signing them to boost numbers great, but are they really going to improve the quality of the squad?

Why has Pards waited till now when we've conceded more goals than anybody, and why somebody that isn't all that great in the first place and will be a squad player at best.

We need a hardened experienced CB who is ready for the scrap. Not this guy, he cant even get on the west ham team.

The Maiga thing is even more nuts.
Here's a guy who failed a medical... so why are we going back in for him?
    Plus he isn't exactly prolific.

Well isnt this just the Mike Ashley formula buy as cheap as you can get and hope everything turns out right. Surprised that not more people on this site and other NUFC sites aren`t having a real go at this bloke. I doubt we would be in such a terrible mess as we are now if he had gone out in the summer and strengthened like thousand upon thousand were saying what should be done.
I honestly think he`d be happy with the reported 60mill parachute payment for being relegated and then selling our best players to make himself more money.

It will only be for cover lads.

There's no way we'd sign this lad for a first choice quality CB.

I said in one of my other articles, we didn't just need one CB and one fullback, we needed two of each.

We're most likely gonna sign Debuchy. Douglas looks like a likely target.

Pardew isn't stupid, and neither is Ashley.

It's in Ashley's interests to keep this club in a respectable decision to sell, and we wont be a respectable position if we finish so low down the table, or perhaps even get relegated, although I don't believe that will happen, it's not worth the risk.

As Tash says it depends why he is targeted. If its as Willos replacement then fine. If it is as the first choice centre back we need then its fecking crazy!

He signed a long term contract not too long ago, so he will cost you more than you will be willing to pay

Tomkins doesn't make sense. You would imagine he was a minimum of £5m and possibly more than that (young, english, hometown club having just signed a new contract and not frozen out or tansfer listed) and he probably would prefer to stay closer to home even if he was to move. As for us, we aren't going to pay more than £3-4m for a squad player (probably alot less) and he isn't going to be a 'purple' player for us. There are other around who are playing better and would probably be similar or cheaper, i don't mind if we get a 'solid but unspectacular' defender so long as we get someone for the right prce who can do a half-decent job for us.

ps. Bzzz and any other hammers who see this. Glad to see Nolan doing well, we loved him up here. Can't stand allardyce though!

    Tomkins is quality.

Look on KUMB and WHO and see how gutted our fans would be at the thought of him going.

I can't see us letting him go. He has just signed a long contract and is a fans favourite. He has also just got his place in the side back.

Maiga hasn't had a fair chance and has looked good whenever he has come on and has scored a few goals in his limited game time. I personally think we should give him longer but it seems he is on his way to Marseille.

Either would be a decent signing for you IMO.
