Why is Digital Versatile Disc not an acronym?

Its not officially the correct title. But they originally started with Digital Video Disk but when they realised it had more uses, they just changed the name to suit. So Digital Versatile Disk is more like a colloquialism.

I have to admit they do say it was originally used for video and they had to re-align it to digital technology!
