Shows Moyes is his own man who isn't afraid to make tough decisions. If he had kept the old coaching team some would claim this was weakness and he was under the influence of SAF.

    The guy can't win.

Sir David needs to hit the ground running, so why not use the team he is used to?

Moyes has just walked into a very tough job. Why wouldn't he want to make it easier by bringing his own people in?

Not really all that debatable. Phelan did nothing major for the team that I can see, certainly not as influential as Queiroz or other predecessors, so he was always likely to go. Martin Ferguson was another - it's hardly going to help the new guy bed in if his chief scout is the ex boss's brother! Eric Steele is a good goalkeeping coach, but hardly irreplaceable.

Replacing Meulensteen with Neville is the big surprise, if that one's actually true. It's now almost 48 hours after it was reported and still no official announcement from the club, so the story looks more shaky every day. Meulensteen is probably the best of the coaching staff, but then he's around the same age as Moyes and has been with the club for over a decade, so maybe he's too close to the "Ferguson way" of doing things?

Also, Steve Round is almost certainly going to play a bigger role in coaching than Phelan did, which begs the question of whether it would be wise to have two coaches both trying to coach the first team in different ways. I wonder if Round will effectively take over Meulensteen's role as head coach, with Neville taking Phelan's supporting role and being general gofer, just with the job titles reversed?

Not going to create a new thread on here, but former Southampton legend and, later on, a Manchester United player Ron Davies has died. Matt Busby said he was the best Centre Forward in Europe, and there were some brilliant ones at the time.
