Is fickle a euphemism for realistic?

Are the rose-tints so sure they knew we'd turn it around in the last 15 minutes after performing so poorly against against Liverpool; that we'd neutralise Arsenal and Tottenham in the way we did; and dominate Swansea who'd had so much possession? Were they saying (like I have been) that it's always taken Hughes about ten games to stabilise the results of the clubs he's managed - and that we might just peak against the top clubs in the run-in?

If so, have to say, I must've missed those consistently positive comments. A few over-optimistic, pre-match predictions doesn't justify the confidence high-ground for me. As I've seen it and in common with the (sensible) visitors to our board, we all go from despondently pessimistic to euphoricly optimistic dependent on our most recent results. This is what paying audiences do - and I'm no different in my response to variable results.

The only difference for me is that as we staggered up to and stumbled over the line last year, and as we're having to do in a different setting this year, I cannot allow myself to as Swords says, count my chickens before they hatch. Disappointment is such a bitter pill to swallow.

Whilst we all celebrate these 12 points amassed in so short a time, and appreciate that no fan ever abandons hope (even Wolves are praying for a result against Citeh today), the fact remains that our future depends as much on others failing as on us continuing to pick up points. Look at Wigan's recent resurgence - where did that come from all of a sudden?! Although I hope and pray for 3 points from each of our remaining three games, I cannot expect wins against Chelsea, Stoke and Citeh anymore than I did against Liverpool, Arsenal, Swansea or Spurs.

As such I have to consider us down until mathmatically proven otherwise. Not a drop of expensive champers will be spilt until we have effectively secured premiership football for the second season running.

If some have been so confident in a favourable outcome, on the back of results that have left us in the doldrums and required so much investment to begin to turn around, that they haven't had to worry, then good for them. All I know is that it's not just my nails but my fingers have been pretty much chewed down to the knuckle in the process.

Is it really fickle to be concerned about the realities? I think not.

I wonder are the "I told you so" brigade the same people that predicted the 8th and 9th place finishes before the season started?

And if so are they going to put on their very own sack cloth?????

    My first post.

I have been up and down since the new year, trying to be upbeat and always 100% in full voice (home and away) - boy! What a season!

For what its worth I have always believed that we need about 38 points. Another win and a draw. Anything less and too much is outside our own control over events. We need to keep control of our own destiny. We have been doing that at home and now, hopefully, we can do it away. I really think we can get something out of Chelsea. 39 points and I don't think we can be caught but that in practice means two wins or a win and two draws. That's a big ask. We have every chance of staying up but as Hughes and the players keep saying we cannot rely on others; we need to do it ourselves.

Welcome to the asylum Ranger. Five or six weeks ago I'd have said 34 points looked comfortably enough, since then Blackburn pulled away, Bolton had a surge we started winning our home games and Wigan topped the lot. The end result of that unexpected form is that most people think Wigan are ok (I don't), we should be ok (I do), Blackburn are goners (I don't) and Bolton are too far back (I do). I think 38 is the safe line that will exclude goal difference, I don't want to be sitting here on the last day listening to Man City running up a cricket score to pip United...

The Stoke game is potentially a banana skin but with Pigeon Gerry and Crouchie there i would hope they would lack motivation

Very pleased to see the bookies now favour Bolton to go down rather than us. I do realise that changes with each result but still good to see. I guess we really want United to win next week. We do not want to face City with them needing to beat us for the title. On the other hand, if we need to do United a favour on the last day, Hughes (once United , always United??) may try very hard to do Sir Alex a favour by going for the point.

Twist and turns a plenty but please don't let us go down now that the hope of safety is in sight.

    COYRsss!

I think we will be okay.
Lets just hope Bolton lose to Villa and Sunderland and we beat Stoke.

Really don't want to go to City needing a point.

Those with a mind to view things more negatively will see that despite a miraculous haul of 12 points from some really difficult games we are actually only marginally better off than when that run started. The relative success of Bolton, Blackburn and most significantly Wigan have meant that we have had to run like crazy to stand still. And the Spurs result really just made up for the failure at West Brom that many of us had on our must win list. My personal view has been unchanged for several weeks: someone is going down on 37 points and better goal difference or not that could well be us if we don't take a point away from home in addition to beating Stoke. Sorry to rain on everyone's parade this morning but I'm hoping that the team themselves have made the same calculations and finally turn in a decent away performance to match our fine home form.

Very much on the plus side however...there can be no doubt that Loftus Road and our magnificent vocal support is the most valuable in the PL this season. Spurs were undoubtedly as intimidated as Arse and the Scum had been before them. If we stay up Tony Fernadez should give a bonus to each and every one of us :)

I've been saying we were doomed since February when it looked like we couldn't even buy a win. I am not as convinced as some of you that we have done enough to stay up and there are still a few twists and turns to go before the season finishes.

    I am not fickle however, please find the dictionary definition of the word below;

    1. likely to change, especially due to caprice, irresolution, or instability; casually changeable: fickle weather.
    2. not constant or loyal in affections: a fickle lover.

I've never waivered from my support of the club. Up or down I will still renew my season ticket and sit my backside down in the same seat that I have been in since the mid 90's. If I was fickle I wouldn't have renewed each year after relegation, after failed promotion bids, after Vauxhall poxy Motors etc.

I'm not an away day supporter, I simply can't get to matches other than home fixtures or the odd trip to grounds around the London area. I don't pretend to be QPR's best supporter as there are many thousands in front of me for that title.

Despite my pessimism I have been saying for months that if, and that is still a massive IF, we stay up I reckon we have the basis for a quality Premiership side and would expect us to finish easily in the top half next season. Our recent run has been inspiring but hasn't been enough to persuade me that we can make up the distance lost in the earlier parts of the season.

For those of you who have kept the faith so far I think you are brave in the face of obvious adversity but just because others haven't agreed with you doesn't make them less of a supporter.

We might overcome doesn't always mean we shall overcome.

    As ever, UP THE R'S!!!!!

Even if we get an unlikely draw against Chelski we still will need to beat Stoke which as many agree is not a given. 3 points will give us a good chance and I think we will stay up on goal difference (I am praying anyway). I've done the predictor thing and thats what I get every time. 3 points against Chelski and we should be safe but that probably wont happen so its now riding on one massive game - Stoke!! MASSIVE is a light word for that game. I am crapping myself now and we have two weeks to go.

Good man Kiwi, hopefully you'll be right.

We had a pre-season prediction thread that we could try bump up after the City game and give "The freedom of the forum" award to those who got it nailed on.

(And relegate the person who was furthest out (Oddball?) to posting on the Barnsley board for a whole season! <wah>)

Huge difference between being fickle and realistically appraising our plight. Some would do well in learning to differentiate.

Still 50/50 for me, can't believe some people are speaking as we're safe already and beating Stoke is a given.

We can still finish 8th though.

No problem I was wrong but I am far happier being me that fickle it so easy ... you wait until the results go bad, slag off the team, and then all suck cocks if we win.... and the best of all is the type that then introduce formation/science into it like some football god . e.g.: Samba Diakite from superior France Ligue 1.... one minute a joke now he is Patrick Veirraaaaaaaaa.
Hill over the Hill? on current form? ... No one listened it takes time and time we wasted getting into our groove.

Can't argue with any of that if I'm honest. If we had of been allowed to build like Norwich and Swans, we may well have gotten an 8th-11th placed finish. But the Mafia put paid to that.

You're right though, I was certain we were down after the Bolton game but some of you guys reckoned we'd still stay up.

Respect you NUT. Now go have your sponge bath, its Nurse Nasty today <diva>
