As a prospective student who lives in the south - but is a Hull City fan, Hull is going to be one of my choices for university. I just wanted to know if anyone on this board studies there and if so? could you give me an idea of what its like? mainly the accommodation side of view but if anyone studies a business related course then it would be great to get your opinions of the course!

    Thanks

I graduated a year ago from studying Chemistry.

I stayed at home so didn't experience the accommodation for myself but some of my friends stopped in them and I went around for pre-drinks and things. Basically if you go cheap, you get cheap. Without sounding a snob, I couldn't stay in them, especially those on Cranbrook Avenue. There's some flats on campus which are much nicer but probably cost a little bit more. My friends stayed on Queens Road the second year and it was better. I went in the business school once and it's a nice building and looks like it has been recently done up inside.

I didn't go to the Uni but I've had a few student houses in Hull. If you shop around you can get a decent place for a decent deal. If you go with one of the big companies you'll get ripped off for a **** house. However one company I would strongly recommend is Agercon. It'd be worth giving them a Google. Just a father and son thing really. I had one of their houses which was stupidly cheap compared to where I am now and where I was before and they look after you and the house brilliantly.

You'll have a great time in Hull. Cheap place to study compared to other Cities.
Plenty of accommodation, depends what you want.
Its a great Uni, dunno about Business Studies course tho

Ive heard pretty good things about the Business School at Hull. Went to Sheffield Hallam myself, would also recommend giving Sheffield a look in if you haven't already as there are always people on the trains to Hull and Back for the City games!

You joke but as someone who has finished transition of University during this period the demographic has dramatically changed from when I started to having recently finished. You might not have to be "rich" but a lot of people are certainly not going who might of previously.

Mate I graduated from there in 2010. The BEST possible thing you can do in your first year is to stay in one of the Lawns blocks in Cottingham.

You get the bathroom and kitchen etc cleaned for you, you can choose self catering or catered, you meet the maximum amount of people all in the same boat and have loads to choose from. They have snooker rooms and a pub etc on site plus they do free buses into Hull centre for nights out.

The Lawns really was the best time at Uni.

Can anyone tell I like the Lawns?

I didn't study at Hull uni, but I've spent the occasional night in a halls of residence ;)

Thwaite hall is a big old building. Parts i saw had single rooms off long corridors. Rooms had a sink, some cupboard space, a desk with internet and beds that were very snug for two. Plus various communal shower rooms and kitchens.

Now what I experinced at the lawns were self contained flats with everything you'd expect, including a spacious bedroom.

I actually studied Business Studies when at the University of Hull - but that was from 1993-1996 so things will have changed.
In terms of accommodation I did want to stay in a Halls of Residence but was allocated shared room in student house on Auckland Ave - advantages are that you can stumble out of bed and be in the lecture in about 5 mins, also because you are, in effect, forced together with 8 strangers you get to know more people. also because a lot of club activities (including the football) happen on campus it is better to be close at hand - so you can somehow get down 2 flights of stairs and home safely even if you've drunk far too much. Buses, from when I was there - are cheapish and frequent, but walking to the Uni from the city centre (where there is a Primark) is really easy because it is soooooooooooooooo flat that you don't notice the distance.
Avoid any side streets and Pearson Park when walking home at night from a club - but as the main route is Bev Road and Cottingham Road it is so safe due to traffic being about.

Realistically there's probably no better time to go really, there are plenty of people who are getting the full grant/loan and going there for three years because it's easier than getting a job, you don't have to pay anything back unless you're earning £21,000 now, which you'll never do if you've just spent three years studying Media Studies, or something like that.

I don't think you actually need to go there Sharpy. I think if you just ask they give out honorary doctorates.

Huddersfield is full of students from the far east. They at the least match the number of British.

Not really, it's down to the perceptions of the student loans thanks to misleading reports suggesting students are weighed down by them. It's all psychological. I would rather be going to uni under the terms English students do now than the ones I'm on as a Scottish student (it's down to residency). Even though on paper an English student leaves with a bigger "debt", the nature of it means they're no worse off whilst they're a student, and once they finish they're better off in terms of money in their pockets and borrowing ability when it comes to mortgages if they earn the exact same salary (assuming it's over about £15,000pa, below that and they're equal). Having been to uni in England 10 years ago as well I'd rather be on my current deal than that one.

*This is based on support not being restricted due to high parental income (since the comment was about needing to be rich I've taken a poor person's position, aka my own position <laugh>)

EDIT: For clarity, the £15k pa (plus inflation) is when Scottish students have to start repaying, along with older (well my age but who went straight from school) English students. As TWF said the payment threshold is up to £21k (plus inflation) so there's an extra £6k you get to earn before you actually pay anything over to them.

Went in 1977 but it was called economics then. We stayed in @Auckland Avenue nice and close for a 9 o'clock lecture. Great bands at the union played pool with madness who were playing with the acrylics(?) which was Roland GIfts band _superb. Also saw most of the early punk bands then onto spiders!!
