McGregors crimes are still far worse than Gavin. But that is where any suggestion of sympathy for him on my part ends. The biggest issue here is that Gavin was effectively piloted in to the Presidential election as the preferred candidate of Party Leader & Taoiseach, Micheal Martin. Yes, there was an internal FF election of sorts , but it was a done deal. Martin wanted his man - a well-known GAA official, but never a politician - in place. As much as anything to help ensure his own elevation in 7 years time. Now the **** is really hitting the fan, for Gavin, Martin and the FF Party, who are now wondering why their other candidate, the excellent former TD Billy Kelleher, didn't get the nod. Not exactly 'popcorn-time' in the big scheme of things, but it has the potential to seriously derail the Taoiseachs political ambitions. Not before time!
