Why the hell Starmer never, at any point, said the meeting was after lockdown had been eased so there was no reason for the Mail to make hay of it the previous times they tried to make the non-story a headline (and they have, at least twice) is baffling

Look how quick the birthday cake story went away when it was pointed out that not only was lockdown paused at the time, it was also during Eat Out to Help Out

Giving a lawyerly response along the lines of "The police found nothing wrong" is exactly why the Wail kept pushing the story no matter how insane they looked

Starmer has been dropped between a rock and a hard place to some extent - damned if he does or doesn't make the 'offer'.
I agree though that the responses to date didn't focus on the legal status of the lockdowns at the time is a mystery. If there is one UK Political leader who would have known the legality of his actions it would surely be the QC and former DPP...

You certainly wouldn't trust the integrity of any UK Chief Constable, that's for sure. They have all been bought out by the Tories over the past decade or so. There has been a very careful selection process to help ensure compliance. Started with pushing through all the May cuts and then accepting all the new Patel anti-democratic legislation.

    You beat me to it...<laugh>

    Quel surpris!
Who'd have guessed that the RW extremist and Johnson buddy Delingpole together with Laurence NoVaxNoMask Fox would be at the heart of this matter?

Yep, most people - since it was all known 9 months ago <laugh>

I imagine a lot has gone to a top management accountants to advise the most deprived councils on how to save money (hint: stop employing management consultants would save quite a lot). Other to some new startup private company employed to examine the bids and distribute the remaining monies (after their cut has been removed obviously). Or perhaps only after forms 1 through 999 have been filled out properly (when there is a charge by the private company for checking their own forms).

Sadly I believe this isn't far from what happens with a lot of the government contracts. (Obviously the contract is written in such a way so that should the private company fail to deliver there isn't really any penalty, nor any way of recovering payments to them.)

Does anyone here who isn't Irish or Northern Irish have an opinion on a united Ireland?

Apart from suggesting that George Best International is about as close to the centre of Dublin as Dublin Airport?
