UN troops would have to be neutral, i.e not members of NATO for a start, kinda narrows the field a bit, and if you include Australia and NZ you're really left with Indian, African or South American forces - can't really see them wanting to get involved.

With Russia and China on the Security Council I can’t see UN troops getting involved in this.

Can't see the UN wanting to be meat in the sandwich. Putin will move for Kyiv, and the West will arm Ukranian troops and resistance fighters. The UK will have to start rooting out the oligarchs and their families in this country. All of them. Abramovich take note.

There will be no Nato troops on the ground in Ukraine. If that happens then nuclear war worries would be a little more justified.
    We'll arm and help Ukraine.
Special Forces would have been there a while, although we'll never hear about it.

Yes, sanctions must be real and hard hitting.

Oh and the Ukraine Ambassador was just on TV.
When asked about the response of the UK by the BBC, he said ours was among the strongest responses, much to the disappointment of the BBC no doubt.
Hard to criticise Boris or the government so far on their handling of this particular issue.

You can’t criticise Boris this time (although some will). He has been spot on all along. I listened to him today and he said Russia will fail.

This has come at a good time for Boris. If his call on Covid, removing all restriction, proves right, he will be on firm ground. Even David Davis was supporting Boris's Covid policy yesterday.

I hope I'm seen as one of the most anti-Boris on here. As you've all said, nothing to criticise him on over Ukraine.

As Zelensky has said, the move into Donetsk and Luhansk has simply formalised the real situation since 2014, except now the Russian troops are wearing Russian uniforms rather than pretending to be mercenaries.

I can criticise Cameron and Obama for letting them get away with this at the time. And I can criticise Cameron, Osborne, Johnson and Sunak for encouraging and allowing London to become a safe haven for money Putin and his cronies have looted from Russia. I notice that in Johnson’s statement he mentioned sanction - but only in the zones occupied by Putin and in Russia, no comment on the billions of dirty money waiting to be frozen at least over here.

First step in an incremental attempt to take over part or all of Ukraine?

Let’s start praising people when positive results are achieved.

Your dislike of all things Tory may be clouding things a little.
We deserve praise for our support of Ukraine during this latest crises.

I do agree that we now must hammer the Russian money in London.
I thought legislation was going through to do this, but then again, brain fog has been an issue for me (more than usual ).

If we don't do the right thing over sanctions etc this time I will be the first to criticise.

Actually I’ll add Blair and Brown to the list of those culpable for turning London into a money launderers paradise, to balance a bit. And I think Obama was a complete disaster when it comes to foreign policy.

If the Ukrainians are highlighting the U.K. as the type of support they want, that is indeed good. But not, so far, actually successful. Threats from the west haven’t worked, let’s see if action does.

Johnson had personally taken the Economic Crime bill off the legislative schedule for this year, but I think all round pressure , from Tories as well as others, might have forced it back in. I hope so.

Wallace saying things are very serious as Donetsk and Luhansk have been ‘effectively annexed’ by Putin. But this happened 8 years ago…..odd. Let’s face it, if Putin stopped here we’d let him get away with it….just like we have so far.

This Russian money thing is a bit of a myth. I just heard someone on the radio saying that many Russians who invest in this country hate Putin ( that’s why they invest here) and we shouldn’t tar them all with the same brush. Making sweeping comments about all Russians is not correct.

    Agree mate
I have been critical of the government on a few things but you give credit where it’s due. When you hear officials from Ukraine praising Boris and the U.K. for their support we should welcome this.
Funnily I went on Twitter today and the usual anti Boris/Tory brigade are very quiet. I don’t see those people condemning Russia? Says a lot doesn’t it?

Did anyone see the program about WW2 on BBC last night at 9pm. It focused on Stalin and Hitler and the build up to the battle of Stalingrad.
the program showed how they both had trod the path of true dictators, and got rid of their military advisers, and got in "yes" men who were not capable. It resulted in military disasters and so took over the army themselves. With pretty disastrous effects. I turned over and then was confronted with Putins "press conference" where he listened to his "advisers" who said what he wanted to hear. It was just like the program about Hitler and Stalin...oh dear!
