    The Mighty Wyn.

Tuesday saw former Newcastle striker Wyn Davies turn 70 and the occasion was marked by representatives of the Fairs Club, who journeyed down to Lancashire and presented the birthday boy with this rather fine cake.

Also in attendance were fellow ex-Magpies Tony Green, Jim Iley and Pat Howard, who joined in the celebrations - plus a few choruses of "The Blaydon Races" and of course, "The Mighty Wyn." The bar did brisk business.

PS: The Fairs Cup lads also stopped off at the Reebok Stadium to leave the following message of support, thankfully without any dubious religious sentiments:

Met Wyn a time or two out in the town, he was a very nice quiet, level headed guy with his feet on the ground. Used to go to the same Night Club as me and stood in the same corner. Frank Clark was the opposite, a jumped up little snot who wasn't all he thought he was. Most of the guys were however quite friendly, little Jinky Jim liked a drink and couldn't handle it well but at least he was friendly with it.

I can't be as old as you agent Bruce, couldn't go to night clubs when Wyn was in town.
He bought me a bag of chips once, instant hero status.
Can you remember who he made his debut against? No cheating. It was the very first match i ever went to.

You're only as old as the woman you feel, so I haven't been born yet!

    I'm a good boy I am.

Heard plenty about the wee Scots lad, supposedly the best centre forward Newcastle ever had.

Came to a very sad end quite close to where I played football and cricket for the works team.
