Just when people had forgotten the joke about the Italian tank having 1 forward gear and 10 reverse ones, he goes and does this. Mamma mia. <grr>

After he got a taxi to a hotel after sneaking off the ship, his first question was, "Do you know where i can buy a new pair of socks!"

How did the all-conquering Romans spawn this set of fannies? I know there's a bit of Moorish thrown into the mix too, but weren't they also supposed to be pretty hard?

There is a theory that lead poisoning contributed to the decline of the Roman Empire.

I'm afraid not Ciaran, it wasn't a joke, that is what he asked and at this stage he knew that people had died, but all he cared about was a new pair of socks. Strange to say the least.

The fella probably didn't want to catch a cold. Everyone knows how important it is to have dry socks.

Hannibal got nothing to do with the fall of Rome. The Visgoths (Northern Europeans) sacked Rome.

I listened to the translated dialogue between the head of the coast guard and the captain, it was on the radio this morning.

It does not look good for this guy, the coast guard were almost ordering him back on the boat and insisting he gave them the information about passengers while the captain begged to be let off the boat.

indeed, but by that time the 'Roman' Empire had moved east and the capital was in constantinople and later became the Byzantium empire, which ended in mid 15th century with the fall of Constaninople.
