    Good morning all from a sunny St. Helier.

    Dave, my question was referring to Dr. Pyke, perhaps I should've made that clearer.

    My reply to W_Y was also about Dr. Pyke, but W_Y was referring to someone else! <ok>

    Morning all. Question of the day: Will we see the temperature exceed 40°C? Latest suggestion to help the elderly is a spray such as you might use on indoor plants, and with it give the person a regular misting. :emoticon-0100-smile Further advice to us all is to give alcohol a miss. :emoticon-0101-sadsm Not sure that it will be heeded as many escape into the shade of a bar to have a cold drink.

    Having spent half my life living where such summer temperatures are the norm, what I found to be the best solutions are:

    1) Remove all glass windows from the house - replace them with wooden shutters. Glass simply multiplies the effect of heat;
    2) Install at least two, preferably four, whirlybirds on the roof of your house, along with eave vents on each corner and ceiling vents in each room directly under the attic space.

    Our home in Queensland also had a three quarter wrap-around veranda, with lattice for privacy on the east and west sides, which allowed us to have open-air living spaces facing west in the mornings, east in the afternoons and the backyard pool at night. I don't know whether that would apply to houses in rural France though...

    Just watched the video Bridge over Troubled Waters for Grenfell, those firemen see some awful sights during their careers, to see them coming out of Grenfell House, each one of them in tears, tells an horrific story. Please God, don't let this happen again! :(

    Only when I am hopping Dave.:emoticon-0100-smile

    Well no change expected in our weather today, although there are signs that the temperature could start to drop to more acceptable levels at the weekend. Looks as if the support given to the elderly is paying off as there have not been reports of them being admitted to hospitals. Spending €10 on an electric fan is a lot cheaper for the state than hospital treatment.
