Beetroot.... Mrs HF makes a fantastic pav bahji, a beetroot, cauliflower and chick-pea side dish. Scrummy.
When I was a five year old recently, school dinner used to have cooked beetroot as a vegetable. As we only ever had cold beetroot with salad at home, this was a new experience for me and I loved it. Can't remember much about the dinners in general, just the hot beetroot.
In a previous life I celebrated an engagement at a Polish restaurant in Shepherds Bush, Patio I think it was called, and I never realised how wonderful beetroot is. As you say, we only see it pickled for the most part.
