A lovely crisp autumnal Aberdeenshire morning.... now how's that Icelandic volcano behaving today? Youngest daughter will (may) be flying back from her holiday this week, she's hoping for an extension of sun tanning time with flight restrictions, I wonder if it'll happen, having been stuck in Norway during the last one for her sake I hope the thing doesn't disrupt...

Britt is looking strong and seems to be fulfilling the potential a lot of folk here saw in him. Was there a clause in his sale he could never play against Watford? There was a buy back clause I thought, was that onwardly transferable or have we now no contractual links I wonder?

Telling times this week. Wonder if Dyer and McGugan will be playing tomorrow? If not then I would think they're on the list for the exit door, not good but there has to be order.

I note that we haven't lost at home to Doncaster for over 50 years. I hope that doesn't change tomorrow. I also note that someone always seems to get sent off in matches where Billy Sharp is playing for the opposition.

Heavy rain here this morning. Feel sorry for Bristol, first one day cricket international for 4 years and pretty limited prospects of any play.

Well that was an eventful morning. Took Mme to the doctor for her six monthly check up. Amazing lady. She starts her surgery at 8.00 am and does her home visits in the afternoon, then has an evening surgery until 7.00 pm. She has Wednesday off, but works Saturday morning.

Then into town for some shopping that Mme wanted, and on the way back stopped off at the baker to get some fresh warm bread. Got back into the car, tried to start it, but all I got was a loud ticking sound. Having fiddled around without success I phoned for assistance. I sat there, outside the town hall as it happens, with people giving me very suspicious looks as they went past this ticking car. I fully expected the bomb squad to turn up any minute. 30 minutes later the man arrives, and tells me that my battery has died. He puts some jump leads on and away it goes. Straight down to the garage for a consultation with my car doctor who straight away tells me I need a new battery, which he fits immediately. He resets the clock and code for the radio, then takes the money and goes back to the job he was doing when I turned up.

The service we get compares favourably with that in the UK. My daughter was over there recently and her car broke down. Despite the fact that she told them she needed it back to catch the ferry they were not very interested. It was only when she said she would take it elsewhere that they stirred themselves into action, then charged her an arm and a leg for the privilege.

Reminds me of being in Wales. Mrs L's car had its ABS warning light keep coming on. Dropped it off at the local garage. Went back a couple of days later to see if it was fixed. Well he said he had done this that and the other to it, up on the ramp etc etc but not found a fault - but the light was no longer coming on so he did not really know what the problem was. OK so I asked how much and he said - oh no I can't charge you I did not do anything !!! that would not have happened in Watford. Also I could not start my car so called out the RAC - bloke tested the batttery and said I needed a new one - but he told me the RAC batteries were stupidly expensive - suggested I buy one and even gave me the number of a garage who were very competetively priced - he then said if I got one he would come back and fit it !!!

Back on the rock - caught the rain before lunch in St. Malo. When making a petrol stop en route, we saw a store that had been so badly destroyed by fire the metal of the exterior of the building was warped as was the sign on the roof. Leaving the ferry as a foot passenger earlier seemed to take excessively longer than necessary.

Watched the 50 years of match of the day programme last night. Just knew they would show Hoddle's goal at the vic but at least it's not in the opening credits any more. In all fairness it wasn't a bad goal!

Stopping over on Lindisfarne on the way back from a sister in laws 70th party in Kent, where Mrs S also comes from. Much merriment with her nicely bonkers family. Not a good w/e for driving down south though. Acquired a lot of apples and plums that were "lying" around.
