There was a nasty surprise awaiting passengers in the arrivals hall at Rio De Janeiro's Galeao International Airport on Monday.

Along with the relatives carrying flowers and taxi drivers waiting with name boards there were lines of off-duty police with banners that had a far more ominous message: "Welcome to Hell".

"Police and firefighters don't get paid," the banners, in English and Portuguese, went on. "Whoever comes to Rio de Janeiro will not be safe". Photos of the protest have been widely shared on social media and in the Brazilian press. The image above was posted on the photo sharing site Imgur, where it was viewed more than three million times in less than a day.

Elsewhere in the city police staged other demonstrations against the late payment of salaries and a lack of basic necessities like car fuel and toilet paper. Around 300 police officers dressed in black stood on the steps of the Rio de Janeiro state assembly. One banner read "The police's priority is the people, the government's priority is the Olympics". A spokesman for the Rio police force said the situation was dire. "We are in a meltdown," he said.

As much as I hate red nose one thing is for sure we would be the most likely to win a tournament as we've ever been.

It won't happen though, doubt he'll be coming back to football and if he did it'd be the scum that he does it for. And plus, it'd be a big struggle to support a team run by him.

A huge amount of his managerial success was down to having virtually unlimited funds. International management is a whole different ball game. Trying to motivate multi millionaires you only see a few times a year so I'm not sure he'd even be able to motivate you lot. Players Lack of pride in the jersey is your biggest problem

Yea I think he always had a nice kitty to work with but not unlimited funds. He didn't spend as much as Moyes and LVG have since and he never spent as much as Chelsea or citeh. I know what you mean though.

Plus he won trophies with the likes of wes brown, fletcher, o'shea, Park Ji Sung, Nani and the like. Again I truly hate the guy as much as any other Leeds fan does but you can't really say he isn't the best manager in PL history.

He was but at the time he was spending, no one else had any money relatively speaking so for many many years they were spending way above others. Chelsea and city were then playing catchup. The money's become a joke now with palace yesterday tabling a bid of 30m for a striker. Palace ffs

He is without doubt the most successful manager in English football, but the best ? Brian Clough took unfancied teams and moulded them into top class teams. What the England team need is another Brian Clough but unfortunately there is not another on the horizon.
