I would be very very very happy if that came off. Glad to see Ayling in the side i really rate him,but i would change pack.
Ayling doesn't look a natural defender (especially with that ponytail), early doors but I prefer Matthews.
If we are to make real inroads into the Championship hierarchy,we may need to replace a lot more of our current squad than we realise. I won't at this stage get into the discussion about who is good enough to remain and who would improve us because I'm not qualified to especially about recruitment. And I don't want to muddy the waters but naming anyone because that just descends into a pantomime "Oh yes he is - Oh no he is not" type of discussion. But to continue with the current players will lead to stagnation. Good enough to stay up but not good enough to make any significant leap forward.
It should be a natural progression for the Manager to replace certain players where better options are available and hopefully this process will start very soon. But of course it depends on how the Manager views it. I think LJ is a pretty shrewd person and I really believe we can make progress under him, but it's going to be a tough Championship next time. Lots of big teams have underperformed and there will be 3 ex Premiership big hitters to contend with. We have several current players who I think could take us forward if they are supplemented by new arrivals in positions where we've struggled this season. Progress for me will be finishing higher than we have this year.
Dont think we should expect too much next season- Consolidation and a mid table finish would still represent success to me- It would be great to go up/play offs but there will be bigger and better teams than us competing for those spots. We showed several times this year that we still have much to learn in this division and hopefully we can do this next season- With only Wagstaff out of contract, there is a need to strengthen still but I cant see it being wholesale
The Championship has become a minefield for managers especially those, like Lee Johnson, who are severely restricted in their budget when it comes to bringing in new players who can face the task ahead. Despite my obvious concern about my club over the years I must finally fess up and say it is not a job I would not relish, and so my reticence about everything Bristol City will be lacking in it's evidence this summer and I will leave my concerns on the sidelines and leave the job to those who should know what they're doing.
