The relative spending was much like Utd and Liverpool around that time, we simply made better buys. We were at a similar level in 91 - 5th and 6th in the league. But we bought Cantona, they spent twice as much on Terry Phelan, your lot spent that much on Nigel Clough. We got Keane, you got Collymore, City spent their money on Rocastle and Summerbee, one of whom was over the hill, the other one wasn't good enough. Then they bought Nigel Clough and got relegated. Alan Ball was the City equivalent of Souness at Liverpool, but starting from a lower position. Just goes to prove, as has been stated ad infinitum, having money isn't enough - it's how you spend it that counts.

Just the PL is it or? another PL team has won European trophies in the last two seasons united got hammered by Bilbao after getting dumped out of the CL by Basle and them went out of Europe to the team that got taken apart by Dortmund
