    Thanks, but No Thanks.

Congratulations Fenway Sports Group of Boston. You have succeeded in turning Liverpool Football Club - five-time European Champions, with one of the largest fan bases in the world, into a footballing pariah.

Swansea City have officially confirmed that their manager, Brendan Rodgers was approached by Liverpool regarding the vacant managerial position. Rodgers declined the offer. No explanation was given.

As it happens, Swansea's last game of the season was against Liverpool at the Liberty Stadium. Before the game, Rodgers was asked to comment on Kenny Dalglish's position at Liverpool. He said Dalglish had
    done a “terrific
job” at Anfield, and that reaching two Cup Finals in one season could never be classed as "failure."

“He’s got that respect which comes from his history of
success with the club as a player and a manager. The Liverpool public and supporters probably see no better man to do the
job. If there’s anyone that’s going to get time, it will be Kenny Dalglish. If
    he doesn’t, then nobody will.”
Not only is Brendan Rodgers showing loyalty to Swansea City and its supporters, he is being true to his word. If Kenny Dalglish was given money to buy players, but not enough time to work with them, what chance has a successor with no Liverpool tradition? Without a top four finish, the next manager will have to be fired. And with hardly any money to spend this summer, Liverpool have no chance of a top four finish next season.*
Taking the Liverpool job is a poisoned chalice. No good manager wants to put failure on his resume. If Rodgers can figure it out, so can the other so-called candidates. What's more, how will the other potential managers now feel about being interviewed for a job that the manager of Swansea City has already turned down? A manager with only one year's experience in top flight football, with no experience in Europe, and having won no honors as a manager or as a player.
Obviously, somebody will take the Liverpool job, if only for the money and notoriety. But what a fiasco! Still, Premiership football teams are only a franchise like any other sporting business. It can always be sold off if it doesn't pan out.....

I made this point in a debate with one of our own posters, a few days back (Vetch) that Rodgers would be a fool to take the job, because the term I used was, that "Liverpool are not far behind Chelski, in the poisoned chalice stakes" and that a 'big club' means diddly squat in such circumstances, and clearly Rodgers feels the same. Actually here's my original comment.

Wow. Big on the "I told you so" there Phill! <laugh>

Rodgers will leave us one day so he won't be loyal at any cost and we shouldn't expect that, but it won't be for a club with owners who are hated and who are likely to sack him after 5 or 6 losses. Just using his head really. Fair play to him though. <applause>

good enough for the scousers i say! they wanted the king of misery (dalgleish) and they got what they wanted! a man left behind in the dark ages of football, in fact he is so out of tune with todays football he probably thought ron atkinson would be a great choice for chairman for racial equality <ok>

Rodgers is no mug, well done to qpr staying up, gonna make it much harder to survive next year with you lot and the hammers throwing money around like its going out of fashion ;)

He won one cup and was a refereeing mistake away from a cup double. They dominated lots of teams in the league but couldn't put the ball away often enough. It might all click next season.
    Should have kept him.

I agree. Some of his signings were foolish, but I feel like they have been tremendously unlucky at times this season - they dominated Arsenal at home.

I think they will finish above Everton next season and get back in the Europa League mix.
