very sorry to hear that sad news lauds. if you gave me a pound for every person texting or on the phone whilst driving i'd be a rich man - its just asking for trouble.

it really needs the publicity that drink driving gets, and i'm sure what you're doing will save lives in the future.

Very sorry to hear that Lauds, very sorry indeed, my heart felt sympathy to you and your family. I've lost count how many times I've seen youngsters on their mobile while driving, but texting is asking for trouble, I'm very strict with my boys regarding this issue, as with drinking and driving, we had a bad accident about 6 weeks back on the North Gower road, where drugs were found in the car, two of the young lads died, while the driver survived. The four teenagers came off the road and hit a tree, just up from the Llanrhidian Holiday park.

I even regularly tell my 19 year old that he's not to get a lift with anyone who has been drinking, but to phone me, this current generation, don't seem to be so aware of danger.

    Sorry for your loss.

I'm a drive texter, I have to be honest. I would never consider drinking though. Maybe this will be the eyeopener to stop me doing so.

Gendros, my sympathy goes out to you and all your family

As a retired policeman, i have seen so many of these accidents due to mobile phones. It is so sad and something does need to be done about it. It is a danger to both driver and any other road users. Gendros good luck with bringing this out and to the youngsters around. If you can reduce it by anything it will have been worth doing.

Lauds my deepest sympathy , I have to say I realy get peeved off with people texting or using a mobile whilst driving. Dragon, I'm the same as you and especially at this time of year with the office party season my oldest, thank God, is quite sensible when it comes to driving , but then it's not them is it ? It is usually someone else who is taking a chance . My son's girlfriend has just witnessed a head on smash ,young driver mobile phone . This was also fatal. I would like to see heavier penalties for someone injuring someone else whilst doing so when driving.

Deepest sympathy to you and your family Lauds.<rose>

This has just been on our local evening news and although it is in no way related to the tragedy that befell your family it's another aspect of the danger of texting/driving that has the same horrific result.

In this day and age you'd think there would be an in car device that cuts out mobile phone signals.

Good thought but that would penalise those who really need their mobiles. Perhaps a paging system could be introduced so you know you've got a call and can pull over, stop the car and deal with it.

The problem is ivor. Every single one of that has that option at the moment. If a call or a text is reecived and you think it is that urgent. Just pull over.

So sorry to here of your loss Lauds. My wife works in intensive care and see's this day in day out, but as we all know most of the time the person driving and texting lives, but some poor sod minding their own business gets killed.

I honestly can understand people texting while driving, it takes me long enough to do one sitting down, let alone while driving.

Thing is, Trundle, people don't use that option, it's far more convenient AND BLOODY DANGEROUS to keep driving. Perhaps a bleep system could be used to notify a call but the receiver would be unable to respond until the car was stationary. Just a thought.

Anything that saves innocent lives would be a winner all eound. What people need to do is exercise some common sense and pull over to take a call. No call is more important than anyones life.

Sorry for your loss dude. Great to see you are highlighting the dangers <ok>

As someone who deals with RTA serious injuries/fatalities every day, it is a sad state of affairs that using a mobile phone when driving is considered acceptable by some. Trust me, I have had to deal with the aftermath too many times. The fixed penalties need to be increased to at least 6 points (if not brought in line with DUI in my opinion). A 6 point penalty at least means you have 1 strike then out if you re-offend.... sorry. Is it any coincidence that Japan, the founding fatherland of mobile phones, is one of the very few places that enforces an outright ban on handheld and hands free devices. Released stats showing the immediate effectiveness of the ban shows revealing findings ...

    Incidents involving mobile phone use
    12 months before enforcement >> Traffic Accidents 2,830 ; Injuries 4,118 ; Fatalities 25
    12 months after enforcement >> Traffic Accidents 1,351 ; Injuries 1,925 ; Fatalities 20
    % change >> Traffic Accidents -52.3% ; Injuries -53.3% ; Fatalities -20.0%

For those that feel they 'need' their phones then it makes you think how we coped when we just had land lines! You live with the consequences of your actions but unfortunately so do the victims (and too often they don't).
Perhaps the phone companies could do more though ... a 'car setting' as well as 'flight setting' which would allow only the emergency call that we feel we all need our phone for and sends the rest to answerphone, allowing us to pull over at a convenient spot (but I suggest the habitual phone user would never really do this, as they feel in total control and every call/text is important).
The bottom line is FAULT is with the driver, who, if they use a phone has made it completely apparent they are not a good driver due to their choice. The driver can choose to ignore the call and concentrate on controlling the block of steel they are driving at speed. However, some studies show the phone could be argued as a symptom rather that the problem. Take away the phone and they could be distracted by anything else .... outside distraction/radio/food.
My foot is firmly in the ban and strict penalty camp. Anything else is just like the USA excusing their crazy gun laws.
