Terry deserves his own thread. He is a legend. HIs documentary on assisted suicide was great and brave.
No more than we need more than 1 joke thread, or "babe" of the day, or Jimmy threads...this is distinct and specific compared to the other one and these responses would be irrelevant and clutter the other thread up. Cut Me Own Throat Dibbler for me!
I dont really like sci fi but when i see how passionate people are about it it makes me want to read it.
Sorry Mike, bit worse for wear. Not keen on that either really. I think Lord of the Rings is brilliant but will give Mr Pratchett a go. Whats the first or best one to start me off?
Start from the first one (The Colour Of Magic). If you jump in to some of the others you might not fully understand the world or relationships between certain key elements or things that are referenced. Get the discworld companion too, helps you understand the world. Also if you want a Terry book based more in reality get Good Omens, he cowrote it with Neil Gaiman and it is brilliant.
It's fantasy/comedy Chazz, with lots of reflecting on social and political subject's in our own world !
First book I read was Wyrd Sisters, the 6th Discworld Book, hence my liking of Nanny Ogg (with Granny Weatherwax and Magrat). Then quickly read the previous 5, and all the rest as they have come out.
Discworld is great! I've read all but Unseen Academicals and the young adult ones (and other spin off ones such as the Science of Discworld). I'm a fan of Vimes but also quite like Ridcully as well!
Am surprised you've not yet read Unseen Academicals as it is Football orientated and involves Ridcully. Product info:- Football has come to the ancient city of Ankh-Morpork. And now the wizards of Unseen University must win a football match, without using magic, so they're in the mood for trying everything else. The prospect of the Big Match draws in a street urchin with a wonderful talent for kicking a tin can, a maker of jolly good pies, a dim but beautiful young woman, who might just turn out to be the greatest fashion model there has ever been, and the mysterious Mr Nutt (and no one knows anything much about Mr Nutt, not even Mr Nutt, which worries him, too). As the match approaches, four lives are entangled and changed for ever. Because the thing about football – the important thing about football - is that it is not just about football. Here we go! Here we go! Here we go! Brilliant Book.
i read strata and the dark side of the sun but when i asked him to sign them up at the university some years back he just about apologised for them.
Both novels were prequel to the Discworld Books and nowhere near as good. The characters didn't develop and weren't carried over into Discworld.
