Really hope this isn't going to happen...

Defender Taiwo being linked with move to Portugal

    28/05/2012
    by Matt Barrett
Benfica are being linked with a move for Taye Taiwo.

The Nigerian left-back, who spent the second half of last season on loan at QPR from AC Milan, expects to leave the San Siro on a permanent basis this summer.

“If Benfica are considering signing me for the next season, then I can only thank them for showing an interest in me,” Taiwo was quoted as saying by O Jogo.

“My plan is to develop and improve myself every year and next season it will also be like that. Benfica would be a good club for me to develop and improve myself.”

While I hope this isn't true, beginning to think that we may not be taking up the option on Taiwo. Should have been a simple confirmation. Maybe that Hughes thinks he can get a couple of season long loans in, like Fabio, to free up resources to spend elsewhere. I suspect, being a Milan player, Taiwo is on a hefty wedge, which they will be paying part of. Likewise Urinals will pay part of Fabio's wages.
Hope I am completely wrong on this, as though Taiwo is not the best left back in the world he's good enough and has personality, character and SOUL to burn. Love him.

Typical Agent feather ruffling.......deals had been agreed with both Diakite and Taiwo.....now it comes to the crunch, greedy agents want more money and start touting the players about to either get more money from QPR or sell to a bigger bidder.

    Jokers!

Definitely worrying that both Diakite and Taiwo remain unsigned. I know that a lot of business is done in July and August as players seek the best deals but everything was meant to be in place for these two. Presumably the club have put proposals to both of them...haven't they?

I wouldnt increase terms and i wouldnt sign Diakite at all if his illness was made up so he wouldnt play 10 games and activate the transfer because he wanted more money.

You wouldn't sign Diakite if his illness was made up to get more money?!!?! Crazy statement to make.

I dont understandf why footballers are expected to live this moralistic lifestyle where they detach themselves from what most people do and earn as much money as they can because they earn 'enough' as it is.

If I started a temporary contract at a company with a view to locking me in to a fixed and permanent contract if we achieved a particular goal and I worked a certain amount of time and during my temporary contract it became patently clear that I was so good at that job I was worth a lot more to that company than we had previously agreed. I would then make sure that I made sure I was in a position that company paid me what I was worth or I would be confident in findiing someone else who would now pay me what it had become clear I was worth.

I have particular sympathy for the African players. Newcastle's Cisse talking recently about how many people rely on his wages. Also Drogba and Adebayor do a lot for local communities. The more money they earn the more they can do at home (and also for themselves - but why not they earned it?!). Drogba is funding a hospital in Ivory Coast at the moment.

Diakite could probably get an extra £20,000 a week more than he previously agreed. On a three year contract thats an extra £3 million. I dont blame him for looking out for himself, his family and most likely his country over a foreign club he's been at for 3 or 4 months

Think the transfer activity may be a lot less furious than this boards activity may suggest.

The Spanish banks are unable to lend Madrid or Barca any money for transfers, that will filter down to all the other clubs and can't see benfica will have huge amounts of cash to splash.

Think a bit of patience from QPR given we are one of a few clubs in a good position may see us doing far better than we envisage come the transfer window slamming shut.

I do not believe that in a professionally run club, as we are becoming, a player can fake an illness for 3 weeks. It may be that Hughes didn't play him because he didn't want to be tied into the purchase but that's doubtful given our desperate situation. It may be that we are wary because it may be a recurring illness - rumor of malaria. Or most likely it's his agent playing silly buggers.
I'm guessing that all that was agreed for both him and Taiwo was their transfer price, not personal terms.

Interesting insight Ironman, sure there is something in this. Will make Chelsea even more powerful if the Russian is still paying all up front in the nearest equivalent to cash. Citeh may do the same. I am sure we will be spreading transfer payments over the length of a contract, as is normal.

Fine, let him go elsewhere, i dont want any liars or players faking illness in our time of need to come anywhere near the club.
Would you still be saying the same if we went down because he refused to play?

We could all be doing him a disservice as it is only speculation that he was pulling a sicky for personal gain. But in any case I think you and SB are missing the point.

In my last post I said 'Diakite could probably get an extra £20,000 a week more than he previously agreed. On a three year contract thats an extra £3 million. I dont blame him for looking out for himself, his family and most likely his country over a foreign club he's been at for 3 or 4 months'. You havent said anything other than he is a proffessional and shouldnt do this which doesnt really answer any of the poitns I raised

This guy is a young extremely talented player from a very poor country with a chance to make a lot more cash. I think your view point is naive and rash. If he signs for us I have no reason to believe that he wont work hard and perform the best he can every week. Because of his immense ability I think you have to make a judgement call on his character before deciding whether to invest in him. I think it he is worth signing because of this combination of things.

If we followed your attitude Paul Scholes would have left United in 2001 after refusing to play a cup game against Arsenal

If we followed that attitude and didnt sign unprofessional players, we wouldnt have signed Barton...Oh wait.

Also refusing to play in a cup game is nowhere near as bad as leaving the team in real relegation trouble.

Mr Damage, think you misread mine, or more likely I wasn't clear. I don't believe he faked an illness, but agree he should negotiate hard, he only gets one chance. If he wants to stay with us he will. Born and brought up in France by the way.

Fair enough SB. I missread you. Seems most would agree we hope we sign him as he has the makings of a top class player. Except Flyer...

Come on you can't use Barton in this context. Shoe-horning Barton and Diakite into the same context buying grouping them as 'unproffesional' is a pretty weak argument.

All we can do is to base it on players who have refused to play. You could stretch this to Tevez but that was a far more extreme circumstance.

Other good examples to follow your theory through without applying exceptions would mean the england team would be preety short on players to pickfrom. How many times have our top players particularly those at sides like United, liverpool and Arsenal have suddenly developed a groin strain just before a friendly which means they have to pull out of a squad. Should we then ban players like Gerrard, Rooney, Cole etc?

Also seems pretty weak to distinguish between games of importance. If your argument is about upholding proffesionalism then surely you shouldnt be able to pick and choose when to be profesional. As a side point to this, I think Diakite would have good grounds to pull a sicky if it means getting an extra £5,000, £10,000 maybe even £20,000 a week. I've pulled sicky for far less in my time
