In the 80s and 90s we did OK at tournaments but never won. In the 00s we did OK at tournaments, generally getting to the quarter finals but never won. What's the difference? We never got knocked out in the group stage like France and Italy at the last WC. But who remembers that in England? No one, we just remember how disgusting it is that we don't win every tournament where there are better teams.
