In the Scottish Sun today, we are being linked with a £5mill deal with Celtic's Gary Hooper. He certainly fits the mould of the extra striker we need in that we is quick, small, tricky and, well, a bit of a poacher really playing off the front man. I just don't know if he has the quality as he hasn't been tested at this level. http://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/sco...pl/3869436/Newcastle-line-up-5m-Gary-bid.html
I'd like to sign Hooper as long as he is 1 of 2 striker we sign. I'll be quite pissed if he's the only striker we sign next summer.
Exactly, cant see Pardew buying a striker from the Scottish leagues. Wasnt it Kris Boyd who was the next big thing playing for Rangers who moved to the Smoggies in the Championship and couldnt even make it in the team he was that bad! We were in for him at the time he moved....glad we dodged a bullet there!
He scores so many goals up there, I think he deserves better with no disrespect to the SPL, I would have him here.
I'd take him. He was knocking them in for fun in a very poor Scunthorpe side in the CCC when we were down there. £5m sounds a little expensive but perhaps p/ex for Forster might do the trick?
The SPL sends the fear of ****e up me for some reason. It's just something about that league where I don't trust any strikers who are banging them in up there. Have there actually been any recent strikers in the SPL who have went on to perform well in the EPL?
Larsson did briefly, Hartson excelled in both leagues as did Viduka and Di Canio but other than that I'm struggling.
Kenny Miller? OT: Would definitely take Hooper; him leaving Scunthorpe is basically the reason they went down last year. He was fantastic in what was a poor side.
Larsson kicked seven shades of **** out of the SPL, but in his move to Barca he scored 3 goals in 12 apps, then 10 goals in 28 apps before moving to the relatively pants Swedish league. Hartson did fairly well. Funnily enough though he started off decent in the EPL and then went on to the SPL where he stormed that league, so I'm not sure if you could count him as a player who did well in the SPL and have went on to perform well in the EPL. It's a given that any decent EPL striker can go onto the SPL and do wonders. Viduka, yeah he did relatively well. 59 goals in 130 apps isn't far off a goal every two games. Di Canio, also did well yes. Apps/Goals 2002–03 43 19 (Championship) 2003–04 25 2 (Premier League) 2004–05 44 19 (Championship) 2005–06 35 10 (Championship) Spot the odd one out
I thought Boyd might have been a decent signing when we were in the champ and er... Was proven wrong so I'll stick with a NO for this one! Also thought this was something new on JJ
Difference with Boyd though is he had no pace. He needed everything on a plate for him. Hooper works hard and battles up front.
some more transfer news Rubin Kazan are reportedly lining up a double transfer from Spartak Moscow, with Brazilian pair Welliton and Ibson believed to be in the region of 15m euros the dippers - Luuk de Jong(surprise surprise),Welliton (Noooooooooooooo)
Arteta played for Rangers for a couple of years like. He would be a decent buy if we also spend about 10-15 million on a young, good striker. Best has done well..
