didn't bother me till one flight when a fat ****er sat behind me decided to part with the wisdom that a plane is at it's most vulnerable when taking off as he said it's the only time the engines are at full throttle putting massive strain on wings full of fuel...... didn't say much after that as i threatened to butcher him in his seat if he continued along those lines.what is it with fat ****ers on public transport

You've probably ruined the Chronicles "Breaking News" story, perhaps you could've asked for a fee. :emoticon-0164-cash:
I recomend factor 50 0r total block if you're fair skinned, it'll stop you turning from a plum to a prune (allegedly). Avoid this look...<grr>

<laugh>! He should have been paying extra for his seat. Disgrace that you have to pay extra for going a tiny bit over the baggage weight limit but somebody twice your body weight gets on scott free.

No scary stories about turmoil with other passengers, but once when flying to O'Hare Airport in Chicago we were advised that because of extreme weather conditions we couldn't land there and had to go to JFK in New York and continue our journey from there.

On reaching JFK the weather was very poor there and we still couldn't land, along with all the other air traffic that had been redirected there we circled for quite a while and it seemed we would run out of fuel and drop out of the sky. However after quite some time we were told that because there was no chance of us being able to land at JFK we were now going to Newark where we'd been given permission to land.

Not quite as easy as it it seemed and indeed with all the planes redirected from JFK there was planes now queuing up to land at Newark and the thoughts of empty fuel tanks returned. The stewardesses were up and down the aisles trying to relax everybody and giving free drinks away but you could tell they themselves were a little perturbed by it all.

When we did eventually manage to land we were rushed through customs and onto the flight that was going nearest to our original destination where we were put up in hotels while the airline sorted our alternative flights to our final destination. I was put up in the airport hotel in Pittsburgh where planes were landing and taking off from just outside my bedroom window. Not the best nights sleep I've ever had.

The planes that were taking off were having their wings deiced and after second wing had been deiced they had to go back to redo the first one which had frozen up again.

You can do something with fellow passengers but you can't do much about iced up wings. It was a great relief to get to my final destination I can tell you.

That would have frightened the living daylights out of me! Im possibly the worst flyer known to man. Whereby, I just sweat. I fly every year, but im still scared. And I just sweat bucket loads. Would hate to have to sit next to myself.

Is that similar to Air Crash Investigation? Cos I saw it on that. Had a reconstruction with some wussy little colombian copilot who didnt have the balls to say they had no fuel and needed to land immediately.

Ah, it could have been that actually. Similar concept with the whole reconstruction etc. Infact, its definitely Air Crash Investigation, there was a marathon of them awhile ago. And this was one of them.

A really good one, is where a British Airways pilot gets sucked out the cockpit, and survived.

****, yeah I saw that one too. Unbelievable! Those guys held on to his legs the whole way and somehow that copilot managed to land the plane perfectly. That my friends, is why you pay a bit extra and fly BA.

Can't believe anyone would watch a disaster programme, I'm not a frequent flier as such, I know some people need to travel by air for work, but I'd probably never fly again if I watched one. I've never seen Titanic either, am I the only one

Yeah, I'm a total idiot in that regard. I don't like flying but I have to do it often, I just can't help watching hideous plane crash documentaries. It's like looking down even though you know you shouldnt.

On the way back from when I was away we hit some heavy turbulance. Why? Because there were ****ing gale force winds in Newcastle. It's without a doubt the most uncomfortable flight I've ever been on. The plane kept frequently shaking.

Pilot landed the plane very well despite the heavy winds though. I wanted to applaud the guy.

I ****ing hate flying, every time I get on a plane I convince myself it's going to crash, the slightest bit of turbulence and I'm saying my final prayer!

That pilot story! How long were they holding him for?

The thing most people seem to forget is that planes are built to fly. That's essentially where they're at their happiest. They're built for take-offs, built for flying, built for turbulence and built for landings.

No matter what stage of the flight they're at, even in very heavy turbulence, they're nowhere near their maximum rated load or stress.

Actually, there was a test on a Boeing a while back where they tested the true weight the wings could take by using machinery. The wings eventually snapped at 150% of their absolutely maximum rated load, so they could handle 50% more than what the engineers actually designed the plane to be able to handle.

Just found the video for it here:

Whenever I've been on a flight with a lot of American passengers they always cheer, clap hands and generally let the pilot know that they're pleased that they're down.

I read somewhere that nobody actually knows how planes fly and stay in the air; there are several theories which each explain a bit but none of them totally explains how planes stay in the air and fly.

This is about the BA pilot thing.
