Summer Transfers 2012

Discussion in 'Liverpool' started by Master Yoda, May 27, 2012.

  1. I've argued the case for Sparing in the past. He is fairly young, a scouser, low wages and never moans. He is the sort of player that Man Utd used to build their squad and current legacy.

However, at the same time I recognise that he is not good enough in terms of quality. His heart is in the right place but he is simply not a top four player, something we should be aiming for. With the likes of Gerrard, Lucas, Allen, Shelvey, Henderson and now Sahin ahead of him, how much game time is he going to see?

With Sahin being here on loan, maybe we should ship him out on loan rather than sell him?

Allen is a completely different kind of player and City were absolutely ****e on Sunday. Poor comparison.

Hmmm what was the result when we played City at Anfield last year? Its your opinion that he's not good enough not a fact. He may not be good enough to be our permanent centre mid but he can do a job, he loves the club, he costs us **** all and he doesn't moan and whinge when sitting on the bench. He might not be particularly fashionable but then all the top teams need good back up players who know they are just that.

If Spearing goes then good luck to him but if he stays I'd urge some of you lot to stop giving the lad such a hard time when its the last thing a fella like him deserves <ok>

And wasn't he in the league game against City that we drew last year at Anfield? (I need to check that to be fair but I think he was <laugh>)

  6. Much like I get quite annoyed when people refer to the £35m we spent on Carroll when debating whether to sell him or not, I feel the need to treat this i the same way.

What does it matter what Spearing (didn't) cost the club...? That is in the past and should not be part of the thought process when making a decision regarding the future! <grr>

  7. Same here, I point the question mark because I'm not sure and can't be arsed to check <ok>

We don't gain or lose much selling Spearing... with Sahin and Allen here now (and Shelvey doing so well... yes I know different type player) Spearings games would have been limited.

Compared to the Coles of the world has salary was minimal... but it all goes towards maybe being able to offer that little bit more that convinces the next Suarez to join us.

Don't get me wrong - I admire and respect him and he is a top class professional. But technically, I don't believe he is good enough. And highlighting the odd game when he did perform well doesn't mean he is good overall. I judged him over the second half of last season where he was given an extended run and we struggled. If he was this adequate back up that everyone is saying, then why were we all literally begging for Lucas to come back?

Having the heart is all well and good but sentiment should not come in the way of technical ability. You need a combination of the two.

Its very difficult to get top 4 standard players to come and sit on the bench though unless we are willing to pay them crazy wages like City and Chelsea. A loan spell may well do him good but with Lucas now out for a few weeks I'd be happier to keep hold of Jay at least until Lucas is fit again <ok>

Good point. I think he could thrive alongside those two.

But I still feel that he isn't good enough to call upon. It probably is just me but I don't feel confident with Spearing as our DM.

Problem is, we need to raise cash to buy players. IMO Spearing is a dispensible asset that can be sold to that position or another area.

  13. Looks at the list of players i provided, we already have top four quality in CM. I don't think the Lucas injury should have an impact, there are still five more CM's beyond Spearing and Lucas, all of which are better options than Spearing IMO <ok>

Yeah you maybe right but with Lucas out for a while is it wise to leave ourselves with no defensive midfielder. I'd much rather we shifted Adam and Downing on to raise cash. There is a reason we have teams interested in Jay and seemingly a lot less interest in the likes of Adam <laugh>

Personally I'd have a lot less of a problem having Jay, Sahin and Allen than Adam, Sahin and Allen <ok>

I also think its good for the other young players coming through to see someone like Jay in the first team squad getting a few games.

Definately! As mentioned before, at least Jay has a bit of passion and fight for the cause!

None of whom have much experience of playing the role of a defensive midfielder though (Gerrard apart who is wasted in that position anyway). You can't play Adam there obviously as he can't tackle a paper bag, Sahin and Allen would be wasted there, Henderson has never done anything more to impress me than Spearing has so that one's a toss up between the two.

Jay is happy doing the dirty stuff that no one ever appreciates. He can tackle, his distribution is reasonable and he'll run all week if you ask him to.

I don't agree... i think allen is ideal for the role as he's already shwoing he undersatnds the positioning and covering. shain is a deep lying playmaker type apparently so ithink he cna play beside allen....

I'd just play gerrard allen sahin in the middle.

spearing can't see the passes and often shows inexpereince in the positioning too. I just don't think he's up to really top level... he'd do well for say <laugh> everton... but seriously... there's plenty of clubs with worse than him in the prem.

Sky Sports are reporting that Bolton are close to deal for Spearing. (£3m)

Shame we're not getting more... but it is 3 mill plus not paying wages... which even if only 20k a week is another mill.

Hard to rank Sahin and Allen this early but it looks like we have 4 quality CMs: Lucas Allen Sahin Gerrard.

    1 promising CM in Shelvey.
3 lower level CMs that can fill in in a pinch... Adam, Spearing, Hendo

That's more than we need. Hendo earns his keep by being a utility knife and young enough he can improve. Adam and Spearing are surplus.
