Stuart nelson , just seen the goals from last night and the first was his fault but ... I think he is a great signing and a real key player . Did we have to pay for him , thoughts
free transfer i believe. all keepers are prone to an error now and again, hart againt poland! but all in all he has made many more brilliant saves than mistakes this year so all in all i'd say hes up for the season by a ong way and is easily god enough to play in league 1 especially if he gets a touch more consistant with his kicking
That goal was a fluke. It was swung over from near the corner flag, it was probably meant as a cross, and it was too high for any defender to reach, and as Nelson was in the middle of the goal it was too high for him, and luckily for Torquay it dropped just in the corner of the bar and the upright where it was impossible for Nelson to backtrack too. One chance in a hundred that was.
Released by Notts County! Best keeper we have had at the club since Harvey Lim! haha, only joking! I meant Ron Hillyard!
Completely happy with Nelson and his handling. Kicking obviously not as good as Gazza but much better than other previous keepers. On balance purely from the handling of shots, I feel more comfortable with Nelson then I did with an unpredictable Gazza. Good to see it all worked out well for us in the end in the keeper department, especially as I thought highly of Gazza.
This thread got me thinking I have been watching the Gills for over 23 years now and I think from memory I have seen 25 keepers play for the Gills and from what I have seen so far Nelson would probably be in the top 5, I wonder how many people could name all 25? I will give you a clue Ron was the first one!
I was counting from memory the keepers I have actually seen play, (for example I haven't included Tommy Forecast as I have not seen him play and there maybe others who were on loan and didnt play or only played in away matches that I did not see)
For me Nelson is one of the best I have seen however I have not been able to see Stannard and Hillyard, however after the keepers like Julian, Nelson looks world class compared to him but overall he is a top keeper at this level and I am sure he will recover from the little mistakes he made.
Talking goalkeepers, let's not forget the late great Johnny Simpson All you 'silver surfers' out there will remember John as the rock behind the champions' team famous defence of Hudson/Hunt/Arnott/Burgess/Farrell who won the league in 63/64 exactly 50 years ago. Deja vu? Hope so !!!!!!! UTG!
I've seen Jason Brown, Steve Banks, Paul Gallacher (Norwich loanee), Dean Brill, Romain Larrieu, Simon Royce, Alan Julian, Ross Flitney and now Stuart Nelson. Unfortunate enough never to be able to see Gazza in action but Nelson is definitely in my top 3 so far with Roycey and JB. I also just want to add that I did actually like Julian and thought he was a good shot stopper, just terrible at arranging his defence.
I was Almostright Alwaysright! I was soo bad at Maths they wouldn't risk the ten shillings for me to sit the GCE O Level. They were right as well!
I meant no criticism of your arithmetic - I was being pedantic ( which would have been my other preferred username if I wasn't alwaysright. Ps I got home from the match to find that there was a 'dusting' of sleet on the cars in my road - I suppose that it's cold where you are ( 25 celcius )
Alwaysright, after storms on Thursday/Friday yesterday was smashing. On the beach up til nearly five pm ( 3 pm UK ) then went home to follow the game on BBC Sport. Your weather report was chilling ! Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....
Surely Paul Crichton must have been in there somewhere? Although I can't remember if he was any good - but I do seem to remember a game where we needed a goal with a few minutes left and he was still employing time wasting tactics... On the Nelson front, I do think he's top drawer...
The 25 i remembered were Ron Hillyard, Phil Kite, Harvey Lim, Scott Barrett, Peter Gleasure, Steve Banks, Jim Stannard, Vince Bartram, Jason Brown, Kelvin Jack (yes i did see him play and play well once!), Scott Flinders, Darren Rudolph, Romain Larrieu, Dean Brill, Derek Stillie, Simon Royce, Alan Julien, Neil Moss, Bertrand Bossu, Lance Cronin, Mike Pollitt, Nico Vaessen, Paolo Gazzaniga, Ross Flitney and Stuart Nelson, I have since also remembered Jonathon Gould and can now recall seeing Gallacher, of these Bartram, Brown and Stannard would be my top 3 though some of the loan signings like Vaessen, Larrieu and Pollitt were clearly excellent keepers (Pollitt still warms Wigans bench I believe and would play if they lost Al Habsi), Nelson is currently performing very well and could be nudging past Royce (our last promotion winning keeper) into 4th in my standings
