.................But can't see Keane taking up the challenge

Quinn lays down gauntlet to Keane with challenge to lead Irish forward

    Wednesday June 20 2012

ROY Keane has been challenged to lead Ireland by his former Sunderland boss, Niall Quinn.

Keane was critical of the Irish team's performance in the European Championships and Quinn believes he should risk his reputation to see if he can improve their fortunes.

"He (Keane) is available and if he sees a problem with the way Ireland are doing things, is he prepared to take the problem by the scruff of the neck and impose himself on it?"

The ex-Ireland striker acknowledges the history between Keane and the FAI but used his own relationship with Keane as an example to how things can change.

    History

"There is history between him and the FAI, but there was history between him and me before he accepted an offer at Sunderland and he did a great job for me there as manager."

Quinn believes that the FAI will have to review Trapattoni's position after Ireland finished with the joint worst record of any team ever at the European Championship.

"I agree Trapattoni's position has to be looked at and it will be interesting to see whether he still has that hunger," he said.

"The thing that disappointed me most was the lack of cohesion. We weren't hard to beat, we didn't have a goalkeeper or a wall protecting the back four in front of that."

I think he would do well tbh, might be the driving force that a team would need

He didn't do badly at Sunderland imo, was doing very well just the mini bust-up made him leave, think he would of eventually done a better job than Bruce tbh

Keane's problem IMHO is that he measures everyone else against himself, and so many are found lacking.

Like his attitude. Like his logic. Glad I don't have to measure up to his standards!

Cant imagine the RoI football association wanting such a strong willed character in charge.

To be honest I think Keane is a bottler. He could have stayed with us and proved himself, remember he re-signed, he did not even get sacked. I think he is a bully and that's why he loves to sit on the side lines and critisise. I would like to see him take the job and show us what he is made of but my bet is he wont.

There would probably be a fair few Irish lads getting mysterious niggles before friendlies but getting their clubs to call Keano and explain. I wouldn't fancy ringing in sick to him!!!

A classic case of "those who can do - others become critics".
