Majority shareholder speaks on the recent run.
Steve Lansdown has voiced his disappointment at the club's recent results but insists: "We have to battle through this."

The club's majority shareholder was at Ashton Gate yesterday to witness City slump to a club-record equalling seventh straight league defeat, a 2-0 reverse against Charlton Athletic.

It also keeps Derek McInnes' men rooted to the foot of the npower Championship table with a third of the season gone, four points from safety.

However, despite describing the latest setback as "probably the worst performance...for a long time", Lansdown was quick to reason: "We've experienced these days before and we've come through them."

He said: “Football’s a strange thing. I know we’ve been here before and recovered but this certainly isn’t part of the plan. There’s no quick or easy solution, we have to battle through.

“I’m very disappointed and I have to be honest, it’s probably the worst performance I’ve seen for a long time.

“We need to take stock of the situation and see where we go from here, but I’m sure the guys themselves will be very disappointed with their contribution to the game.

“It didn’t go our way. We had a couple of chances, particularly in the first half, which could have made a difference. We suffered and the second goal proved the killer, after that it was all over.

“It was a disappointing day for everyone associated with Bristol City Football Club, but we’ve experienced these days before and we’ve come through them – we need to do that again.”

He continued: “We’ve got some good players, a good squad and a good management team – we have to all work hard to get to where we want to be."

Twice before City have lost seven straight league games, back in 1970/71 when Alan Dicks' team recovered to end the campaign 19th in the second tier and again in 2005/06 under Gary Johnson in League One when the fightback yielded a ninth-placed finish.

Lansdown added: “We need to get some points on the board to move off 11 points and work from there. As we did in 2005/06 under Gary, we need to keep working hard, keep persevering with what we’re doing and kick on.

“My ambition for this football club is to get to the highest level and at the moment we’re not going in the right direction.

“I speak on a regular basis with Keith Dawe, the chairman, along with Jon (Lansdown), who is managing director of the football club and Doug Harman (executive director) too. We exchange notes; we’re all disappointed today and feel we should be doing better. We’ll dust ourselves off, have another conversation and see how we can help improve things.

“It’s disappointing however much money you put into it because you want the players to go out there and perform. They didn’t perform (against Charlton), but in the early parts of the season they performed very well. The first few weeks were good; we thrashed Crystal Palace [at Ashton Gate] and now we see them [at the] top of the table, and we’re bottom. We need to do the reverse now and do a Crystal Palace.

“We invest in the team and support the manager to do the job and I think we’ve got those players here, it just hasn’t been happening recently.

“Derek has come in to help turn this football club around and a lot of work has gone on behind the scenes, with the Academy, the under-21 team and management structure. We’re working forward, we’re not looking to change that and we’ll keep investing to make it happen.

“It’s disappointing when the team doesn’t perform and we have to put that right.”

Whilst majority shareholder of City, Lansdown is also owner of Bristol Rugby, another team who have been struggling for results this season.

Lansdown added: “Bristol Rugby know what they’ve got to do and they’ve got a good set-up there. They’ve got a few players in and the defeat last week (against Nottingham, 7-63) was desperate for Chris Booy (Rugby club chairman) and he couldn’t believe how bad they were.

“They’ve bounced back (against Jersey, 39-16) and got themselves back on track, which is good news.

“But Bristol City is the closest to my heart and it’s where I really want to see the success come through. I’m very disappointed at the moment but also determined that we get it right in the future."

Still maintain what I said earlier on another thread.......8 losses on the bounce and he will be on the carpet. Thats our next home game against a decent Blackpool side. Two tough away fixtures follow that and on recent form I see a return on no points from any of them.

The dreaded vote of confidence after 8, then bye-bye after 10.

Players, managers, chairman, everyone at a club in these hard times say just what WE the fans want to hear...."we are in this together"....."we will put in an extra shift on the training ground"....."the management has our full backing"....ect, ect ,ect.

Falling from this league is not an option, and if SL feels he needs a drastic change to avoid it, SL will do it. I don't think he is the kind of guy to shy away from these big decisions, even if he has to come out and say "ok, I got it wrong". He has been here far too often, and I would wager he has already put together a "blueprint" of a plan should it go on much longer.

I hope and pray I am wrong though...........I don't like to see clubs chop and change managers as they do nowadays, but its a cruel, cruel effect that the modern game has done. I would love to see us turn the corner and someone bring this thread up and say how wrong I am.....I realy would, so come on City, prove me wrong!

Thanks to SL for this statement. I think we should all calm down for the present and start looking forward to Blackpool with some hope and a bit more optimism than the last couple of days.
I'm the lucky mascot don't forget; I've seen two at home and two wins!

PS for Caldicot and ROD I'm at the Millenium on Friday evening so lets hope our rugby lads can also start their season.

Anyone else hear SL on the Twentypence show last night?...about 5: 20 ish I think.

You can say or think what you like about the ole' gas-head, but he is a good sports interviewer and he pushed a few times to get SL to confirm he has given the dreaded "vote of confidence" to Del. Sir Steve would NOT be drawn into an answer at all....either way.

I was pondering this on the way home then (and what to spend my 135 million euro lotto win on) and read into it this.....
IF Sir Steve HAD said "yes, he has my vote of confidence Geoff", does that mean SL can't or wont be able to act soon IF (and I hope not) we get no points from the next to or three games so as to save face as it were?

    OR

The fact that Sir Steve has NOT given his "vote of confidence", does this now mean SL could infact weald the axe sooner rather than later IF he feels he needs to?

I read it as a non-commital either way tbh and SL still holds all the cards re Dels future.

    Who knows...........
