Not sure if anyone really cares, but today is the start of the MLS season here and for once, there is actually a buzz about it. I am sure I will get the Boston Goals responses but I agree with it as I think our commentators sometimes baffle even the least knowledgeable person ( watch FSC report and you wonder how they have a job). Oh and while I am on the subject, I don't like how the CONCACAF just copied Champions league for our intercontinental tourney and on top of that the way that teams get in is a bit strange ( due to our play-off system). Either way, just letting everyone know who is interested in other nations footy that ours starts today.
I'm a bit ignorant of the US sports system, Can you please explain how the trading system works over there. Also does MLS have a player draft? of so can you also explain how that works?
You know, I am not 100% sure as to how the trades go, I don't even think there is a "window" really, I need to do my research on that. I know there is definetely a cap, a "designated" player that you can pay over the odds for ( Beckham, Henry). There is a draft and it is another American thing that for me, it just does not work. We are in the process of getting the MLS and USL ( United Soccer leagues) to start creating academies to develop players but for some reason the draft still exists. it almost feels like trading cards at times, players move around a lot in the league , a little too much for my liking. Also there is "generation adidas" players who if they are top prospects and potential US internationals, they sign these contracts that guarentee them usually more money than if they were to sign a regular contract with the team. The team does not pay for them, adidas does! Crazy stuff like this make it all a bit confusing. The draft is crazy too as yes it is a nice way to recognize being selected and going pro, but I don't really like it, it is a way to keep a level playing field. A lot of times trades happen around the draft as teams look to offload and bring in new playres whether it be draftees or experienced players for draft picks. Also if you have an expansion team they automatically get the first pick and also ( If I remember right) get to pick players from each of the teams in the league ( the teams giving the players up usually have a say so they don't lose their top players). It is all a bit strange and qualification for the CONCACAF champs league goes to Open Cup winners ( sort of like FA or Carling cup), The winner of the MLS cup ( play-offs), the runner up I believe has a play-in game, and last but not least, again I think this is correct, is a place for the most sporting team! ( team with fewest red, yellow cards, etc). Strange I know, but that is the way we roll and are trying to grow the game here. It is starting to get better and I think this year will be pretty good actually. Something to watch for the games between Vancuver, Portland, and Seattle will be very good games and the fan base there is not only really good, but pretty electric as well.
