Ok - everyone this is not a joke, well I don't think so...

I've been asked by a member poster to look into us Gills members sponsoring a player under the not606 name.

I've never looked into the cost of this so I need feedback on the following, if this is even going to get off the ground:

    1. What cost is involved?
    2. Anyone got detail on sponsoring a player (save me looking it up)?
    3. I would have to check with admin to see if we can use the not606 name?
    4. Paypal was mentioned, never used it, is it a safe method for the purpose and also punters money?
    5. Most importantly who would be interested?

I can't really say anything about sponsering a player but I can tell you that PayPal is pretty safe. I use that for ebay and other sites. Takes a little while to set up but is worth while.

surely an email to the club (address on the club website would answer all your questions bar the using the not606 name. would sponsering a player be worth it tho? would it generate income for the site etc?

I am an expert at using PayPal as I have brought over 2000 items on ebay in the last 2 years so have used PayPal loads and it is well safe, They are very good at looking after customers.

jokey - sorry maybe I've confused things a little - so should clarify my part in this.

Yes your right that an email or even a bit of research probably would answer the questions, however, I'm ASSUMING the member poster's request was thinking of us generating cash to sponsor a Gills player rather than would it be worth it - i.e. generating income for the site.

Also my main question would lead to point 5. - would people on here be interested in departing with cash to sponsor such player?

I think I should make clear my stance on this, that with respect I have no interest in generating income for this site, although sponsoring via a name i.e. not606, may well have some gain. I'm more of the stance that if members on here want to sponsor a player, only then would I consider my contribution in this as a Gillingham supporter, the same as anyone else. To be truthful, can I be asked with it, the answer is NO, however, out of respect as a mod, I consider it my duty to follow it through and will do so, only if members want to go along with it.

I will just clarify one final point for everyone, the site owner makes no money from this site, quite the opposite, it costs him cash out of his own pocket, although advertising now helps towards it - Although no suggestion otherwise, all mods and supermods are unpaid volunteers. Therefore contributions from any individual is of their own personal contribution.

    thanks

Danny Kedwell, Whelpdale, Spiller or Payne would be my choice.

You will struggle with this brb. First of all if it is to be branded not606 you really need a significant proportion of Gills 100 or so registered contributors. The cost of these sponsorships is almost entirely negotiable and i would expect you to be quoted around £1K in August but only a fraction of that come November for the unsponsored leftovers. It has been rightly pointed out that to be helpful to the club you would need to make sure the commercially attractive players are left for sponsorship by commercial organisations so to make sense you would need to be sponsoring one of the lesser known names ideally leave the club to choose. What you have to avoid at all costs is people clamouring for their own favourite.
So it all boils down to getting a substantial number of folk to undertake to put their hands in their pockets (think in terms of 40-50 people paying on average £20). Then you need to apportion the bill (something like 50% allocated pro rata the number of members and then say 50% pro rata their number of posts). All this gets very tricky, a few can't pay, a few more wont pay, and a lot more intend to pay but somehow the money never arrives.
Anyway i do not want to be too dismissive of what is really a rather nice idea so i will start the ball rolling by offering 2.5% of the sponsorship subject to a cap of £25. Are there 40 more out there prepared to do the same?

@ £25 I'll be in. Think it's a great idea. Couldn't give a monkeys who we sponsor. Maybe one of the younger kids that have just broke into the first team. Think that'd be a good idea.

bristol - thanks for the best informative response I've had, as a gesture of goodwill, I will mirror that offer (just don't tell my other half!).

Right over to the rest of you, serious stuff this, so no p*ss*** about, we need at least another 38 before we can even consider it any further, a straight yes or no at the quoted 2.5% - £25 cap?

    Simple !
