Its not the manager who decides to spend money. The chairman decides how much money he can spend. And with Ken Bates thats nothing, he just lines his own pockets. Unlike our owners who put their money where their mouth is
Alright the East Development is a load of rubbish I agree with that, but I don't agree with the 'Bates never spends money' thing. All our manager under Ken have had money to spend. Kevin Blackwell spent a fair bit, Wise got to bring in Kilkenny, Johnson, Michalik (and that was only 5 months after we'd be in administration), McAllister got Snoddy, Becchio and fatty Robinsons big wages and Grayson's spent on Gradel, Lonergran, Bromby, McCormack, Bruce and also big wages on Mccarthy and O'Brien loans. We don't need to spend ridiculously, so why bother. Leicester etc. had to spend cause their squads were ****, but we have a good squad that needs tweaking.
Gradel - 250k Lonergan - 100 or 200k depending on who you ask McCormack - 350k Bruce - 250k McCartney and O'Brien - reportedly 20kpw. Well below what teams around us have spent.
Do you really think Bates said to Grayson that he can spend money on players and Grayson wouldn't because he doesn't like spending money?? He is managing the club on a shoe string budget and said that he let some squad players go, which allowed the club to keep the likes of Snodgrass and Gradel!! Think the money has gone on the East Stand's facelift!!
It might sound far-fetched but it's possible. It gives Grayson a great excuse for not getting promoted and people are more willing to accept a poor signing if they don't cost much. You need to pay attention to what Simon Grayson says. It's clear that he's more interested in trying to make himself look good than building a club.
