    afternoon all

Had an interesting discussion recently about how people identify 'solutions' rather than the 'problem' hence nothing seems to change/get done

    for example

people want immigrants out. This is the solution

the problem is lack of jobs, this is down to the disappearance of manufacturing bases, so by kicking out immigrants there still would be no jobs

can you name anymore and do you agree?

People saying that the government should be spending on healthcare, education etc - Solution

The problem is that the money is not available to maintain previous spending levels and I don't hear people asking for spending coming up with ideas as to where the extra money will come from.

Increased taxation for the rich, windfall taxes from banks and energy companies, going after rich tax avoiders who, because of legal loopholes, get away with avoiding paying millions in taxes each year.

or would it make a difference?

people want spending on healthcare because of the waiting times, horror stories, old people left on beds etc

The solution is 'more money' , truth is probably that no matter how much money goes in the NHS was never built to cope with it all
Also people want everything for free, eg obese people getting surgery on the NHS or childless couples getting IVF etc
All very good but the NHS was not meant for this, it was MEANT to be basic healthcare for free

of course govt will not/ cannot say this so they are always patching it up

    Why can't they say it?
Most people would agree that some of the things currently covered by the NHS shouldn't be.

En masse perhaps, not for a small number of extraordinary rich people.

mainly because the NHS is a vote winner. and its too much of a risk for the govt or any party to say anything other than 'we will increase investment in the NHS'

It would be refreshing for someone TO say it.

The problem with higher tax for the rich and powerful is that the government will never do it because these are the people who can make or break a politician in an election.

Exactly. I get really annoyed when some morbidly obese person who has basically just been to lazy to put in the hard work get surgery on the NHS to help them lose weight and get more healthy <grr>

Wouldn't it be a vote winner to say, "We'll keep spending at the current level, but cut the amount spent on unnecessary and/or frivolous stuff"?
Cutting down on pen pushers would probably be a vote winner, too.

this is what people fail to see at times. The PM is just the face, he has no REAL decision making powers, the decisions are made for him by his party whips, business etc

I've said it umptten times, but usually I am met with anger and condemantion.

The NHS is a shambles, corrupt and **** (in the main) and should be privatised at once, saving people a forutne in tax and the country a fortune in expenditure.

Free Health care should only be for those who are in poverty and really can't afford it.

The biggest thing that would save the NHS money is increased efficiency and a reduction in the admin staff as there are far too many admin personnel in comparison to front line personnel like doctors and nurses.

They have been saying that for years

Problem is if you look at a lot of local papers you will see front line stories of 'heartbreak'. The couple who cant have a kid and its the 'evil' govt
or the fat bloke who has 6 months to live unless he has a gastric band but cant afford it

Look at cameron at the moment, he tried a couple of things and there was uproar and so he back tracked. If you look into some of the stuff it wasnt a bad idea as such, especially if you think freeloading should stop

Then of course the money for wars was/is found so it is there even with us being in so much shoite economically

The NHS is fantastic. The only people who run it down are the right-wing press who want to privatise it so they and their friends can get even richer.

That is my point. Even though some on here seem to be agreeing, generally to say this would be governmental suicide

The NHS is full of abuses. There are people who are getting its benefit who have never benefitted this country as they should. and i dont mean the immigrants
