What's wrong with calling the round ball game soccer? Isn't it just a corruption of Association Football?
If you're a yank, I guess there is nothing wrong. If you are a Brit, then the word we use is Football.
I'm Australian sy. It's just one of those odd things about the game. Don't get me weong, I'm not taking the piss, it's just that the term football is a generic one. It covers everything.
I don't think that there is any authority anywhere which would say that Rugby Union isn't football, even in England.
That's true, but where is it written that Union, League, Grid Iron etc, are not football. All I'm pointing out is that "soccer" is at least a name.
cyclonic, with the exception of grid-iron, us Brits invented all of those. We're no longer world beaters at any of em, but it's our ball and we get to decide what to call it.
Nothing at all. The term "soccer" was coined by an Englishman... Legendary Football Players: Charles Wreford-Brown
Our football (your 'soccer'), is the original. So why should we have to change the name because other versions have been invented since? It's like the FA and the Football League, we didn't rename them the English FA and the English FL when other countries created their own national bodies.
We were going to change the PL to the EPL until Swansea came along, they get all ****ty if you call it that now...
No need, the others are called what they are called. Example 'Scotish FA' while 'The FA' refers to the original.
