Wasn't specifically commenting about last weeks run Bustino but overall she will have to be extremely good to compensate him riding her, I just don't rate him but that does't mean he is no good it's my opinion. Maybe i'm still a little angry Moore lost the ride.
But StH Doyle's not a bad jockey, in fact he's a good jockey as those clever people at Juddmonte have realised, and the difference between a good jockey and a very good jockey is the matter of a pound or two at most. Very few rides by jockeys result in races won that should have been lost, more often it's races lost that should have been won which is the key factor. If Doyle had had all of Moore's rides this year he'd have probably won on 95% of them. I know how you feel about jocked off jockeys as I think it's a poor show. But I think there's more to this Doyle appointment than meets the eye. Moore is the best jockey at the moment but after 3 slim years now with Stoute I can see him going freelance or to Coolmore. Retaining Doyle ensures Juddmonte have their jockey on their horse every time. They won't have to put up with Buick riding a Rothschild horse in preference to theirs etc.. They'll also have one jockey casting his eyes over all their animals on the gallops. Doyle was pretty unknown 3 years ago but he stepped up immediately given the Charlton job. He will only get better. My guess is Radiator isn't good enough at the moment. It was interesting Stoute ducked the Fillies Mile for the easier race. Maybe she'll strengthen and get better but maybe she's not that good. I would wait to see her run next year before entrusting any of my money on her classic chances.
I agree with you mostly Bustino, you make fair and valid points in what you say and I guess Doyle is still young and will only improve for every ride too, perhaps I was a being a little harsh there, I would like to see him do well and also hope Radiator turns out to be half decent too but like you stated, I would want to see her put in a good run next time before making any serious judgement there.
Remember this filly?!? Had 3 very contrasting runs as a juvenile. Fifth at ‘Glorious’ Goodwood on debut (when fave for a very hot maiden), then arguably the most easiest winner of the season when she ran away with a turf Lingers Park maiden by 15 lengths, prior to disappointing at Group level when a very warm 11/10 shot. Anyway, Radiator’s 1,000 Guineas and Irish 1,000 Guineas entries remain. But more immediately she’s engaged in Saturday’s ‘Fred Darling' across the county line in Royal Berkshire - http://www.sportinglife.com/racing/...-stakes-registered-as-the-fred-darling-stakes. It will be fascinating to see how she fares this season and I still think she remains a hot one to follow. The 40’s currently available re her for the first fillies Classic certainly won’t remain if she proves the ‘Darling’ on Saturday.
Radiator didn’t, of course, take up her entries in the ‘Freddie Darling’ and the ‘1,000’ but the potential Group 1 flame still burns brightly for her as Sir Mick Stoute has now put the old girl in the ‘Coronation Stakes’ at Royal Ascot. More immediately though Radiator has been declared to run in the Listed Michael Seely Memorial Stakes at York on Friday (3.15) with the Doyle boy booked. The yard won the York heat last term and let’s hope that Radiator is similarly hot as she scorches away from her opponents. Boom boom.
Certainly agree with Bustino that Doyle is a good jockey, and, as when a critic refers to a poor ride by any jockey, the bile usually emanates from his or her's pocket? Have no time for jockey bashers (unless fraudulent intent is obvious); these people have no business gambling on a horserace.
SwanHills if your referring to me shouldn't you read the comments before posting? I said Doyle was no good for the horse before he rode her! I never backed that horse and very rarely criticise a jockey on a horse I do back, quite the opposite in fact so don't go jumping the gun on your high horse.
STH: I most certainly was not referring to you, or any single person in particular. My comment was a general one about jockey bashing and punters who continually blame the jockey when they lose. Can't stand them. Please don't be so paranoid and take things so personally. God almighty, I've really had enough of this.
I apologise then it is just that I was critical of Doyle above but not from backing his horses or anything of the kind , more so that Moore lost the rides but as it conspired Doyle was about to take over as number 1 for Khalid Abdulla anyway so it was inevitable.
On today's evidence, Barney, she looks no better than solid Listed-class material. Nothing wrong with the ground, it looked a fairly-run race, and Doyle didn't seem - at least to my eye - to do anything seriously wrong. But the top six were all within about three lengths, and she doesn't appear to have that quicken-twice ability that the really good ones have. If she were* mine, I'd be tempted to look for a soft G3 or G2, maybe abroad, then off to the paddocks. (Inclined to side with those who think Doyle may not reach the very top. Good judge of pace, and looks to be sound tactically, but he seems to lack the last-furlong ringadingding that takes you all the way). * Note the use of the conditional form of the verb here - I try to be punctilious about these things.
As you are up on your verb conjugations rainer, what form of the verb to have is "of". Hear a lot of it but I'm buggered if I was taught that one at school.
Ron, do you mean things like when Cameron says 'I wish I hadn't of gone to Eton' ? Can't say that sort of thing greatly worries me, and I guess it's crept in because 'of' and 'have' sound very alike in casual conversation rather than any deadly spread of illiteracy. But obviously standards must be kept up on Not606.
Although disappointed that Radiator didn’t commence her term with a win on the whole I was delighted with her opening effort and think there is a lot to look forward to this season with the old girl. Sir Mick Stoute said before the race that she would come on for the run and in a driving finish with the 2 other principals (who between them had already run 3 times in 2014) Radiator only gave way in the final 50 yards as her lack of a run and fitness told. Radiator prior to Friday was rated 97 and the filly who followed her home was perched on 100. Going on this latter figure and assuming she will improve say 6 lbs for the run and that Sir Mick Stoute will be able to garner a further half a stone or so of improvement over the campaign I think she won’t be that far off Group 1 level by the conclusion of 2014. From mid-summer onwards there are quite a few 'fillies only' Group 1 races which in certain years turn out to be very, very week affairs (the ‘Falmouth’, the race run in honour of the ‘Carry On’ films, the ‘Ooooooooooooooooooooooooh Matron Stakes’ and the ‘Sun Chariot’ spring to mind) and granted that she will both come on for the run and improve throughout the term I don’t think Radiator will be that far away from winning a big ‘un especially if genuine Group 1 class opposition doesn’t emerge or run in those races. At the moment though, as Rainer says, she is what she is and that is just a Listed class filly. I know that my prognosis involves a few ‘ifs’ but should they materialise still think she can reach the top. Whatever, though, I still believe that Radiator could be hot and remains one to follow.
I think Rainer's right, she may improve but it may be costly banking on her doing so. But I wish you well SBC.
I see the official handicapper has rated the first 3 in last Friday’s Listed heat pretty much how the crossed the line. Lustrous 100 (up 7 lbs), Radiator 99 (up 2 lbs) and Lady Lara 98 (down 2 lbs). I was expecting a bigger hike than that for Radiator and think potentially 99 could be most lenient. I’m mentioning the handicap marks as yesterday’s ‘Weekender’ seemed pretty certain that a lot of last Friday’s field (including the front 3) would reoppose in next months Listed Sandringham Handicap at the Royal meeting – unless these fillies aren’t stepped up to Group 1 level, for the Coronation, or asked to take on the colts there really is very little else for them at Royal Ascot. Radiator would to my eye appear very nicely treated off 99 and she could present the perfect opportunity for members to yank their toppers skywards as she gallops clear in the final furlong next month.
Radiator’s long term entry in the ‘Coronation Stakes’ remains but probably more relevant is the fact that Sir Michael has just given her an entry in next Wednesday’s Listed Sandringham Handicap at the Royal meeting. Top weight, at this stage, is J Wonder on 104 (although that figure may increase slightly as the Irish runners aren’t assessed yet) and Radiator, as mentioned above, has been allocated 99. If she takes up this Sandringham entry I really think Radiator is going to be very hard to beat off this perch next week as she should, like so many of Sir Michael’s, come on considerably for her seasonal opener. Get ready to yank those toppers skywards, people.
No messing about from Sir Mick. I had expected the old girl to go for the much easier option of the Listed Sandringham Handicap today but, no, instead Radiator on Friday will be thrown into Group 1 company in the ‘Coronation Stakes’. James Doyle rides. Going to be fascinating to see how Radiator gets on at the ‘top table’ although I think its fair to say this isn’t the strongest ‘Coronation Stakes’ ever run. 18/1 is available, at the moment, re Radiator.
It does look a weak Coronation. If My Titania isn't top notch it looks very much a 2nd Division Group 1. But good luck to you and Radiator.
Although I still think it was something of a strange decision to up Radiator to a Group 1, at this stage of her career, rather than opt for a handicap in which off 99 she must have had a leading, leading chance I thought the old girl ran with enormous credit to be beaten just 3.5 lengths in the ‘Coronation’. She did all her best work in the closing stages and you would imagine that she would, perhaps, benefit from stepping up to 10 furlongs. Sir Mick may disagree though as he has now given Radiator an entry in next months Group 1 ‘Falmouth Stakes’ at Newmarket on 11 July over a mile. On that point the horse who just pipped her first time up this term at York, Lustrous, took the massive step up of half a mile when running in the Group 2 ‘Ribbisdale’, last week, and ran a blinder to finish runner-up beaten just half a length. I’ll stick with Radiator and feel the form is there and that she could pop up at a big price, one day, in a big ‘un.
There looks to be the possibility that Sir Michael will significantly drop Radiator in class on Saturday as he’s put her in the Listed Coral Distaff at Sandown Park. On first glance it looks a very weak race and you would have to say that if Radiator isn’t up to winning the heat then she’ll never amount to a top table performer. Only 3 of the runners have perches above 100 and Radiator, on official marks, is the second highest rated on 103. The top performer, in their view, is Charlie Hill’s Queen Catrine (105), what a lovely name for a filly by the way. That one was Group 1 placed as a 2YO and returned to form last time, after 2 poor runs, with a runner-up finish at Royal Ascot. If Radiator goes to Sandown Park on Saturday though you have to say she has to win to fulfil those Group 1 expectations.
